1. Who is the main character in the film? Give the following details:

1.1 Name (Given name and the name she gave herself);

1.2 Age;

1.3 Gender;

1.4 Civil Status; and

1.5 Occupation.

Sabrina Claire "Bree" Osbourne, formerly Stanley Schupak, is an independent transgender

woman. Though her age was not mentioned in the film, it appears that she is on her thirties. She is
working at a local restaurant as a waitress and a dishwasher. Bree's civil status is single because she did
not marry anyone despite having a son named Toby.

2. Describe the main character in the film. What are the gender roles that she portray? How does she
cope with the norms of the society? How does she handle stress? How does she behave?

Bree is feminine, put together, and powerful. She is a transgender woman; she adapts every role
to her comfort and freedom. In the film, Bree expresses herself confidently. She can be sensitive when
someone asks about her gender. Whenever she is experiencing a panic attack, she handles this by calling
Margaret, her psychiatrist.

3. The main character, was at first, not allowed by her psychologist to undergo the surgery. What was
the reason? Explain this thoroughly.

When her psychiatrist found out that Bree had a son, she withdrew her confirmation letter for
Bree's gender reassignment because she wanted Bree to have a peaceful life with no regrets upon facing
the past. This was against Bree’s will because she wanted to forget about her past in an instant, and her
plans were already laid out. Though this was hard for Bree, little did she know that this sudden change
of events got her closer to her son, Toby.

4. How did she react after finding out that she has a son? Did this influence her decision to undergo
the operation? Explain.

Bree was in a state of shock upon finding out that she has a son. She did not know how to react;
at first, she wanted to get Toby out of her life before her gender reassignment starts. But she became
closer to her son; she loved him dearly. Even if she had Toby in her life, he was not a hindrance for Bree
to pursue gender reassignment.

5. Describe her son in terms of behavior. Explain his behaviors based on his experiences and by using
some gender theories that you learned in our class. What do you think are the factors that
contributed to the gender issues of his son? Elaborate.

Toby can be reckless about his behavior. Growing up in a toxic environment can affect a child's
psychological health. He struggled with sexual abuse from his step-father, lived with people who
encouraged him to do drugs; he was underage (Seventeen years old), and he already worked as a sex
worker. Whenever toby would experience stress, he will go somewhere private and do drugs because it
was soothing for him. Because of these experiences, Toby became an independent person; the
socialization theory is an example of Toby's situation.

6. What are the reactions of the significant people in the main character's life when they found out
that she's going to have an operation? Did their reactions and opinions influence the main character's
decision? Explain.

Everyone close to Bree was shocked that she will undergo gender reassignment, especially her
mom and toby. In the film, it appears that Bree's mom could not accept that she will go through gender
reassignment. Toby was also outraged when he found out that Bree is his biological father, and he kept
insulting her about her gender. Whereas, Bree's father and sister were more open about Bree's gender.
Though these people had different reactions, it did not stop Bree from going through gender
reassignment; she is beyond doubt that she wants to become a woman.

7. Do you think gender reassignment should be legalized here in the Philippines? Explain your answer
by presenting factual pros and cons of this matter (laws and other scientific facts).

Yes. Though gender discrimination is still prominent in the Philippines, Transexual people have
the right to express themselves. The 1987 Philippine constitution on its Commentary on the Republic
approach indicates that “The State values the dignity of every human person and guarantees full respect
for human rights.” Aside from this, the constitution hallows in its Due Process and Equal Protection
conditions that “No person shall be deprived of life, liberty, or property without due process of law, nor
shall any person be denied the equal protection of the laws.”

The predominant factor in assuring human dignity and regard for human rights in those plans serves as
the foundation for numerous activists that attempt to make the government and its offices liable to
Filipino transgender and LGBTQIA+ people. The SOGIE Equality Bill fulfills the rights outlined in the 1987
constitution, especially the equal protection clause. It identifies the LGBTQIA+ as companions and
guarantees that their rights are protected since everybody is. Hence, The SOGIE Equality Bill places the
non-discrimination of the LGBTQIA+ as both a political and general duty.

However, not everyone in the Philippines is pleased with these matters. There are countless senators
and anti-LGBTQIA+ who want to junk trash this bill. As an ally, it is my responsibility to educate the
people in our community upon these issues.
8. What are your three (3) learning insights after learning all about gender reassignment and watching
the film? Start your statement by saying 'Before learning all about gender reassignment and before
watching the film, I used to think that (insert thought). After learning all about gender reassignment
and after watching the film, I now think that (insert thought).

Before learning all about gender reassignment and before watching the film, I used to think that
Transexual people are not much of an issue in our society because I grew up in a non-homophobic
environment. I also used to believe that Transexual people do not have any struggles upon expressing
themselves because it is in their freedom and will to do so. After learning all about gender reassignment
and after watching the film, I now think that 1.) We should not invalidate someone's decision when they
want to undergo gender reassignment because this requires plenty of courage for a person to take up.
2.) Always be polite and ask for preferred pronouns of Transexual people because this can be a sensitive
matter for them. 3.) People with different genders does not make them less of a person, we should
always be respectful because they are human too.
