CASE STORY TITLE: A Better Alternative for the Youth of Barangay Maligalig

Conflict Identification

Base on their case, Barangay Maligalig is currently experiencing a threat to their youth’s welfare.
As stated in their case, there are incidents that are uncontrollable for them in their market a few
months ago. There are a lot of concerns coming from the vendors in the market. They said that
they have reported some teenagers using solvents and rugby in the market, as well as smoking
and drinking alcoholic beverages, which is illegal for a teenager. So these teenagers decided to
use the market as their main spot to do those things or just a tambayan. Another concern is that,
these teenagers tend to recruit others and if not, those who refuses to join them ended up being
beaten. Now, they use a cheap but dangerous kind of solvent which is the solvent glue and they
have been using it for a long period of time to get high. Just like any other kind or form of solvent
can cause a serious health problem such as respiratory failure and abusing alcohol and drugs can
lead to lung problems as well as chronic respiratory failure where your body cannot take enough
oxygen or worse it can put you into coma.

Now, the obvious effect of these problems is that, teenagers in therr barangay will just keep
getting worse physically, mentally, and especially their health. Because of these problems,
Barangay Maligalig could be a dangerous place not only for the people living in their community
but also the people who are visiting their community.

Plan of Action

For these kind of issue, I think the best way to do is for the community to implement a
recreational activities or program for the youth. Through this kind of program, surely, this will
help the youth especially the teenagers to be aware of the surroundings, of themselves and to
acquire some skills and lastly, make the best use of their time through this program. Also, there

should be a treatment for the issue of drugs and substance addiction where there would be a
therapy for them but with one or two guardian and parent present in the therapy for them to
guide and support the child without getting influenced by others. Now, this project or activity is
for those teenagers who are just sitting all day sniffing on their solvent to make them test and
improve their skills not just physically but also mentally in order for them to feel better and
realize that there are other things to do to be happy and to enjoy.

Reflection

Even in my own community, there are the same issue as Barangay Maligalig about teenagers
abusing drugs and substance. I think there’s no other way and no other person or people that can
help them with their addiction other than their own community and the parents who should be
looking out for them. I believe that the barangay should focus more on the teenagers on how to
make them better. Because they don’t need some scolding, but they need help, attention and
love, the community should be aware of that because that’s what they need.
