GRADE 1 ENGLISH GRAMMAR HANDOUT 1

I. Months of the Year


There are 12 months in an year.
These months of the year are of the Gregorian calendar or
what we call the English calendar.
The months are:
1. January - 31 days
2. February - 28 days in a common year
and 29 days in leap years
3. March - 31 days
4. April - 30 days
5. May - 31 days
6. June - 30 days
7. July - 31 days
8. August - 31 days
9. September - 30 days
10. October - 31 days
11. November - 30 days
12. December - 31 days

II. Can and Can’t
A. Can
1. ‘Can’ is used to ask a question. The answer to the
question will be either Yes or No.
Examples
Question: Can you swim?
Answer: Yes.
Question: Can you run?
Answer: No.
Question: Can you fly?
Answer: No.

2. It is also used to say we are able to do something.


Examples
I can jump.
I can read.
The baby can smile.
B. Can’t
‘Can’t’ is used to say you are not able to do something.
Examples
I can’t write.
The baby can’t walk.
