The coast
It is one of the world's largest exporter of asparagus, paprika and organic
bananas. Artichokes, mangos, avocados, rice, olives, sugar cane, grapes, apples,
yellow corn, potatoes, sweet potatoes, cassava, onions, beans, tomatoes, and
garlic are also grown.
The coast also produces the world's finest cotton: Pima and Tanguis.
The highlands
It is the region where potatoes come from (altiplano). The Incas were the first to
cultivate potatoes around 8,000 BC to 5,000 B.C. When Spanish Conquistadors
discovered the flavors of the potatoes, they carried them to Europe.
Because of its extreme climate, few vegetables and fruits can grow there. The main
productions are from: potatoes, onions, beans, wheat, barley, and corn.
The rainforest
This region produces lots of varieties of fruits, vegetables and trees, but its difficult
access (few roads), is the reason why few products can be exported to the rest
of the country and abroad. They mainly produce coffee (the world's sixth largest
exporter) and cocoa (the world's third largest exporter). Wood like cedar, caoba,
and oak are also exported.
