Course Objectives:
Understand the philosophy and basic concepts of quality improvement
Demonstrating a comprehensive understanding on the commonly used statistical methods by industry for
quality control and improvement.
Understand the assumptions, theoretical foundations and basic business and economic principles of
process monitoring.
Implement and operate valid SQC tools for different quality control/monitoring scenarios.
To develop basic understating on prevention, detection and analyzing of errors in the quality control
process to take corrective actions accordingly.
To introduce a variety of techniques commonly used in industries to understand variation,

T1 Introduction to Statistical Quality Control By DOUGLAS C. MONTGOMERY, Sixth
Edition 2009 by John Wiley & Sons, Inc
LEARNING OUTCOMES
LO1 Students will able to use the methods of statistical process control under different quality
control/monitoring scenarios.
LO2 Students will able to design, use, and interpret control charts for variables and attributes.
LO3 Students will able to perform the analysis of process capability and measurement system
capability through control charts and evaluate simple acceptance sampling plans.
LO4 Students will learn how to manage random variation & out of control process.
LO5 Students will able to apply control charts and experimental design techniques to solve
real-life quality control problems. Students will also learn to apply the methods of SPC
using Software Packages to monitor and control quality.
LO6 Students will able to learn the statistical and economical design issues associated with
the monitoring tools.
Lab-Description
In this single-player simulation, students learn how to manage quality in service, health care, and
manufacturing settings through the use of analytics related to statistical process control, process
capability, and the cost of quality. Students play four different challenges that ask them to calculate
control limits, use control limits in real time to maintain control of a process, analyze control charts post
hoc to determine whether a process is capable, and make managerial investments in preventive measures
that contribute to the cost of quality in order to minimize the total cost of quality.
LO1 A review of essential calculations in SPC, including control limits and process capability
index
LO2 How to use statistical process control in real time to make go/no go decisions about a
process
LO3 The difference between a process that is in control and a process that is capable, through
post hoc analysis of a control chart
LO4 The relationship between Internal Failure Costs, External Failure Costs, Appraisal Costs
and Prevention Costs and how they contribute to the total cost of quality.
