Social Science and Philosophy (Ged 111)

Week 2 Topic: Various Social Science Discipline

Activity # 2

Write an essay about yourself. In your essay you must be able to discuss how the various social
science discipline becomes an important part of your individuality. Give examples or scenarios
in which you will be able to clearly associate the various discipline of social science to your
existence particularly in your behavior as a human being.

Why we need to study social science? That’s the first thing I asked myself as I read the
direction of this activity. Looking back from the previous discussion, I realized that social science
makes sense of the institutions that shapes our lives . It is important to study social sciences
because it is important for people to learn about their own identity, history, and culture. Learning
about your own life can help you learn more about the world around you.

There are various social science discipline that becomes an important part of our
individuality. It include demography, human geography, environmental planning, economics,
management and business, education, social anthropology, linguistic, law, economic and social
history, politics, psychology, science and technology studies and social policy. While many
social science disciplines are important in helping people to understand and engage with the
wide variety of institutions that shape their lives, political science is particularly valuable in
helping people learn to be citizens. Through participating in government at all levels, holding
lawmakers accountable, and upholding democratic norms and values. Individuals must have the
resources to understand how government works and how laws and regulations are made;
evaluate policies and outcomes based on effectiveness and values; make informed decisions
about policy preferences; and, especially, understand the importance of participating in
government, from voting to protesting.

By understanding humans and social structures, we are better equipped with accurate
knowledge on how to change and control human behavior; build better, progressive and more
functional social structures; as well as better the interactions and relationships between
individuals. The further we progress our knowledge of ourselves and society - the further we
progress as individuals and as a collective towards a better, more functional society.
