Analyze Learners | Instructor(s) / Trainer(s): Shaun Boehm, Joseph Scogin

Grade: 4th Grade

Subject Area: Math

General Characteristics

The students are 9 and 10 years old. Mr. Boehm teaches a math class and he address them as

“highflyers.” This means that this class is on the cusp of being in the gifted and talented class but

has not yet tested into it. There are many students that are above grade level in their math

competency, but mainly the class is below or are meeting grade level. The students come from an

unban setting and primarily come from moderate to low income socioeconomic situations. The

behavior of the class has never been a problem, however there is a student that is on the Autism

spectrum and his understanding of social norms sometimes creates conflict.

Entry Competencies

The students in general are able to do the following:

Solve simple math problems using addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division

Navigate the Internet

Complete their work on their iPads

Respond via written and verbal communication that ranges from below to above grade-level

proficiency

Keep up to date on their in class monetary class management system

Learning Styles

Mr. Boehm’s class incorporates technology an many times of the day. The class seems to learn

best if they can do it with a screen or electronic manipulative in front of them. This use of

technology gives the student a sense of accomplishment because they can track their progress

and compete with other students. Keeping track of their class monetary system helps them dive

into more practical uses for Microsoft excel while also practicing their math skills. The room is

decorated with many Disney themes pillows and hiding places where students can work on

classwork in a lower stress environment. Having places of refuge gives an extra level of comfort

to the students while they are doing their work and allows them to work more easily.
