General Characteristics
The students are 9 and 10 years old. Mr. Boehm teaches a math class and he address them as
“highflyers.” This means that this class is on the cusp of being in the gifted and talented class but
has not yet tested into it. There are many students that are above grade level in their math
competency, but mainly the class is below or are meeting grade level. The students come from an
unban setting and primarily come from moderate to low income socioeconomic situations. The
behavior of the class has never been a problem, however there is a student that is on the Autism
Entry Competencies
Solve simple math problems using addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division
Respond via written and verbal communication that ranges from below to above grade-level
proficiency
Mr. Boehm’s class incorporates technology an many times of the day. The class seems to learn
best if they can do it with a screen or electronic manipulative in front of them. This use of
technology gives the student a sense of accomplishment because they can track their progress
and compete with other students. Keeping track of their class monetary system helps them dive
into more practical uses for Microsoft excel while also practicing their math skills. The room is
decorated with many Disney themes pillows and hiding places where students can work on
classwork in a lower stress environment. Having places of refuge gives an extra level of comfort
to the students while they are doing their work and allows them to work more easily.
