Problem Set (Module 2)

Direction: Solve the following problems and show your complete solution. No solution, no credit. Highlight
your final answer.

1. Problem (15 points):

A particle of equivalent sphere volume diameter of 0.20 mm, density of 2500 kg/m3 and sphericity of 0.6
falls freely under gravity in a fluid with a density of 1.0 kg/m3 and viscosity of 2 x 10-5 Pa-s. Estimate the
terminal velocity reached by the particle.

2. Problem (15 points):

Spherical particles of density 2500 kg/m3 and in the size range 20 – 100 microns are fed continuously into
a stream of water (density = 1000 kg/m3 and viscosity = 0.001 Pa-s) flowing upwards in a vertical, large
diameter pipe. What maximum water velocity is required to ensure that no particles of diameter greater
than 60 microns are carried upwards with water?

3. Problem (15 points):

A suspension in water of uniformly sized spheres of diameter 100 microns and density of 1200 kg/m3 has
a solids volume fraction of 0.20. The suspension settles to a bed of solids volume fraction 0.50. (For water,
density is 1000 kg/m3 and viscosity is 0.001 Pa-s). The single particle terminal velocity of the spheres in
water may be taken as 1.1 mm/s. Calculate the velocity at which the clear water/suspension interface settles.
Calculate the velocity at which the sediment/suspension interface rises.

4. Problem (15 points):

If particles of diameter 20 microns and a density of 2000 kg/m3 are suspended in a liquid with a density of
900 kg/m3 at a concentration of 50 kg/m3, what is the solids volume fraction of the suspension? What is
the bulk density of the suspension?

5. Problem (15 points):

Solid particles having a diameter of 0.090 mm and a solid density of 2002 kg/m3 are settling in a solution
of water 26.7 oC. The volume fraction of the solids in the water is 0.45. Calculate the settling velocity and
the Reynolds Number.

6. Problem (15 points):

A dilute slurry contains small solid food particles having a diameter of 0.05 mm which are to be removed
by centrifugation. The particle density is 1050 kg/m3 and the solution density is 1000 kg/m3. The viscosity
of the liquid is 0.0012 Pa-s. A centrifuge at 3000 rpm is to be used. The bowl dimensions are b = 100.1 mm,
r1 = 5.00 mm, and r2 = 30.0 mm. Calculate the expected flow rate in m3/s just to remove these particles.
