Electrical Power Generation

The purpose of the electric power system is to generate, transmit and distribute
electrical energy. The major components of the power system are: power plants, which
generate the electricity, transmission lines, which transport and distribute the energy,
substations with switchgear, which provide protection and form node points, and loads,
which consume the energy.

TNB Electrical Power Generation

The largest electricity utility company in Malaysia and also the largest power
company in Southeast Asia with RM60.0 billion worth of assets serving over
six million customers throughout Malaya and the eastern state of Sabah.
Core activities are in the generation, transmission and distribution of
electricity. TNB is ranked 10th in FTSE/Asean 40 Index , with market
capitalization of US$9.2bil.
To date, TNB remains a major player in electricity generation which form a
significant part of the Group's diversified range of business

Currently, the TNB Group has a complete


power supply system, including the
National Grid which is energised at
132, 275 and 500 kV. The National Grid
is linked via 132 kV HVAC and 300 kV
HVDC interconnection to Thailand and
230 kV cables to Singapore.
TNB Electrical Power Generation Capacity

The TNB Group has a generation capacity of 11,296 MW.


TNB generates electricity mainly from two major types of plant;
 hydroelectric plants
 thermal plants
There are 3 hydroelectric schemes with installed generating capacity of 1,911 MW with 21
dams in operation.

Sungai Perak hydroelectric scheme, with 1,249 MW installed capacity:


Pergau Dam- 4 x 150 MW = 600 MW; Temenggor Dam- 4 x 87 MW = 348 MW.
Bersia Dam- 3 x 24 MW = 72 MW; Kenering Dam- 3 x 40 MW = 120 MW; Sungai Piah
Upper Dam- 2 x 7.3 MW = 14.6 MW; Sungai Piah Lower Dam- 2 x 27 MW = 54 MW
Chenderoh Dam- 4 x 10.7 MW + 1 x 8.4 MW = 40.5 MW.

Terengganu hydroelectric scheme, with 400 MW installed capacity:


Kenyir Dam- 4 x 100 MW = 400 MW.

Cameron Highlands hydroelectric scheme, with 262 MW installed capacity:


Jor Dam- 4 x 25 MW = 100 MW; Woh Dam- 3 x 50 MW = 150 MW; Odak Dam- 4.2 MW.
Habu Dam- 5.5 MW; Kampong Raja Dam- 0.8 MW; Kampong Terla Dam- 0.5 MW.

There are 6 major thermal power plants with installed generating capacity of 4,435 MW
in operation, plus 3 thermal plants with 4,950 MW operated as (Independent Power
producer) IPP plants.

SESB generates electricity mainly from two major types of plant;


steam turbine thermal plants and gas turbine plants.

Ranhill Bhd

One of Malaysia largest company. Started out in 1973 as engineering


consultants, it expanded first into engineering, procurement and project
management, then into turnkey construction, facilities management,
development and ownership of projects.

Now,Ranhill is premier engineering corporation, focusing on industry sectors


essential to nation-building: oil & gas, power, water and infrastructure.In
Ranhill's financial year ended 30 June 2006,more than 60% of it's RM9.3billion
order book came from overseas, including a housing contract worth RM7.4billion
in Libya and hydropower plant in Pakistan.
Sarawak Electricity Supply Corporation

Sarawak Electricity Supply Corporation (SESCO) and now


known as Syarikat SESCO Berhad was privatized on 1st July
2005. It is responsible for the generation, transmission and
distribution of electricity for Sarawak state in Malaysia.

SESCo provides electricity to about 382 000 customers.


It is owned 51.6 % by the Sarawak State Government and 45 % by
the Sarawak Enterprise Corporation Berhad (SECB).

SESCO has 36 power stations with a total installed capacity of 750MW, comprising 64 per
cent gas turbines, 18 per cent thermal generators and 18 per cent hydro turbines, are
strategically established throughout the State. The major towns are connected to via a
275/132kV State Transmission Grid.

SESCO generates electricity mainly from two major types of plant; hydroelectric plants and
thermal plants.
Powertek Sendirian Berhad

A subsidiary of Tanjong PLC, generates and sell power as an


independent power producer to Tenaga Nasional for uploading onto
the National Grid, Malaysia.

Total generation capacity is 1,490 MW.

Powertek generates electricity mainly from gas turbine plants.


Powertek and its subsidiaries own and operate three power plants in Melaka, Malaysia with
a total installed generating capacity of 1,490 MW, namely,

Telok Gong Power Station 1, Telok Gong, Melaka - 440 MW open cycle gas turbine
("OCGT"), owned and operated by Panglima Power Sdn Bhd.

Telok Gong Power Station 2, Telok Gong, Melaka - 720 MW combined cycle gas turbine
("CCGT"), owned and operated by Panglima Power Sdn Bhd.

Tanjong Kling Power Station, Tanjong Kling, Melaka - 330 MW combined cycle gas turbine
owned and operated by subsidiary, Pahlawan Power Sdn Bhd.
YTL Power

YTL Power, a subsidiary of YTL Corporation, generates and sell


power as an IPP to Tenaga Nasional for uploading onto the National
Grid, Malaysia.

YTL Power is the builder, owner and operator of 2 power plants for a
concession period of 21 years following Malaysia's privatization
policy.

YTL Power generates electricity mainly from two combined cycle power stations; using both
steam turbine and gas turbine. The company owns and operates the following power plants
with installed capacity of:

YTL Paka power station, Paka, Terengganu - 808 MW Pasir


Gudang power station, Pasir Gudang, Johor- 404 MW
Overview of Electrical Power System
Transmission System

The transmission system transmit three-phase power from the


electric generating stations to the load centers. In this system
500 kV, 345 kV, 230 kV and 115 kV lines connect the loads and
