Comparative Adjectives

A Sara is studying at cooking school. She is moving to a new apartment.

The new apartment is in the city. It is on the eighth floor, so it is higher than her old apartment.
However, the new apartment is closer to the cooking school than her old apartment. It is near a
bus stop and a subway station. Although living in the city is more expensive than living in the
suburbs, it is more convenient than living so far away.
Sara is happy that the kitchen in her new apartment is bigger than her old kitchen because Sara
does a lot of cooking. She also likes her new balcony because it’s roomier than her old balcony.
But her new bedroom is much smaller than her old bedroom. The living room is smaller than the
one in her old apartment. Sara’s old apartment was near a park so it was a lot quieter than her
new apartment. It was also much cheaper!
But Sara thinks that living in the city is more exciting than living in a quiet area.

Superlative Adjectives

A Dear Amy,
Well, here we are in the U.S. On Monday, we arrived at one of the largest airports in the world.
The children were tired, but happy. Tony, my youngest child, was the most excited of the three.
We are staying with my friend Paula in a gorgeous house in one of the most expensive areas.
Paula tells me that some of the most successful public personalities live nearby!
Tom and I are looking for a house of our own. We’re finding out about the nicest neighborhoods
that are also the safest for young families. On Wednesday we saw a lovely house in Westside,
one of the best areas in the city. Unfortunately, Westside is also furthest from Tom’s work. We
thought of living in the downtown area, which is closest to the schools and Tom’s office, but I
don’t think it’s the most suitable neighborhood for families.
Paula told me that Silver Lake is one of the most popular neighborhoods and has the biggest
parks in the state. I hope we find a home there!
Love to everyone,
Jenny

Dan and Macy are trying to decide which apartment to lease. They like two apartments, but each
one has problems.
The first apartment has lots of space. It has many built-in closets, which Macy likes. Dan likes
the apartment because it has lovely wood floors. But the master bedroom isn’t big enough and
the bathroom is too small.
The second apartment has less space than the first and there are fewer closets. But there is too
much wall-to-wall carpeting and the living room isn’t roomy enough. The second apartment has
many modern utilities, but it is a little too expensive for Dan and Macy.

A Read the text.
This week our interior designer, Craig Hall, writes about a store called Timeless.
Timeless is not a new store. But it looks completely different from the way it looked three
months ago when the manager decided to remodel it. Although the store doesn’t look the
same as before, it’s as interesting as it always was. Timeless is still the best place to buy
antique furniture. The store is not as cheap as other antique stores, but the furniture is not like
the furniture in any other store. The antique coffee table I looked at was of excellent quality.
Although it was over a hundred years old, it looked as good as new. I also saw some light
fixtures similar to those in the White House!
So if you, like me, love antiques and like to buy furniture that is not the same as everyone else’s,
spend some time in Timeless!
