Adjective + preposition

Adjectives are used in simple sentences to describe people and objects. For example, she is an interesting speaker.
More complex sentences use adjectives + prepositions to make statements about a person's attitude towards
something. For example, she is excited about the concert tonight. Here is a list of the most common adjective +
preposition combinations to express people's feelings.

ABOUT
Use the following adjectives followed by 'about'. Each group of adjectives has the same or related meanings. Use
the verb 'to be' with these expressions.

 angry / annoyed / furious about something

Example: I'm really angry about our losses on the stock market!

 excited about something

Example: He's excited about his birthday party next week.

 worried / upset about something

Example: He's worried about his upcoming examinations.

Making Promises

Promise is a statement that tells somebody that you will definitely do or not do something.

Conversation

Angel : I need help preparing for my presentation on Friday.


Brian : I could help you with that.
Angel : Are you sure you have the time?
Brian : I promise you that I have the time to do this. If I

didn't, I wouldn't offer to help.


Angel : What would be the best time for you to help me?
Brian : Tomorrow night would work for me.
Angel : Should we just meet here?
Brian : OK, and I'll bring some information that helped me with

my presentation.
Angel : I'll see you then.
Brian : See you tomorrow night.

Angel : Could you help me prepare for my presentation on Friday?

Angel : I hate to ask you to do something like that.


Brian : This will not interfere with my work. I promise you that.

By and until
How to use ‘by’
We use by to say that something will happen or be achieved before a particular time.
Examples:
 It has to be finished by  two o'clock.
 He should return by  the end of March.

How to use ‘until’

We use until to say that something will continue up to a particular time.

Examples:

 We'll be here  until  July. 


 The concert went on  until  eleven o'clock.

On time and in time

The phrases "in time" and "on time" are very similar in meaning, but English speakers use them in slightly different
situations.

How to use ‘on time’


Doing something "on time" means meeting an appointment, or meeting a time that has been set by someone. For
example:

 I hardly ever get to work on time.


 My flight's on time, so I'll meet you at the airport at 3:30.
 If you don't turn it in on time, you'll receive a 20-point deduction.
How to use ‘in time’
Doing something "in time" means doing it before a deadline, or doing it before it becomes unavailable:
 I wanted to do some kind of study abroad program, but I didn't get my applications done in time.
 Oh no; it's already 9:55. Are we going to be able to make it in time?

Chapter 9
Expression of congratulation 

Congratulation is to tell somebody that you are pleased about their success of achievements. Congratulation is
an expression that we use to give the congratulation utterance when he or she succeeds in doing something

The object of congratulation must be a person. You would congratulate somebody on something they have
achieved on particular occasion; especially there is an obvious result.
Examples:
o I congratulated for his achievement in the class.
o Congratulation for your scholarship to Japan.
 adalah ungkapan selamat yang kita gunakan untuk memberikan ucapan selamat kepada seseorang ketika berhasil
melakukan sesuatu. Berikut adalah beberapa contoh expresssion of congratulation dan tanggapan yang tepat atas

with the trophy?
Daniel : Thank God, we did. Fortunately we succeeded to get the first place.
Rahel : Wow that’s a good job, Dan. Congratulation on your team success!
Daniel : Thank you very much for saying so, Rahel. So, how about you and your team in
astronomy competition?
Rahel : Unfortunately, I and my team didn’t get the first place. We got the third place but I was
really happy since we had won over many other teams and gone that far.
Daniel : That’s the spirit, Rahel! I am sure you and your friend did it very well. I congratulate
you on your great success.
Rahel : Thank you very much, Daniel. We still have to learn more to be the first like your teams
did.
Daniel : Cool! Let’s fight for the next competition!

2. Expressing congratulation – publishing the first novel

Farhan : So, how long has it been since the first publishing of your first novel?
Yola : It’s been 3 weeks since then.
Farhan : So, how many copies have been sold this far?
Yola : Thank God. Many people seem to like it very much. Since the first publishing 3
weeks ago, there have been over 500 copies sold.
Farhan : Splendid! I’d like to congratulate you on your success at your first time publishing
your novels.
Yola : Thank you very much, Mr. Farhan. It’s very kind of you to say so
Farhan : Keep the good work, Yola. I know you could be a great author someday.

Expressing Compliment

Compliment is to tell somebody that you like or admire something they have done, their behaviour or their
appearance.

Compliment is an expression that we show or say to express or give praise. Some people use compliments to
“butter up” somebody or to flatter in order to increase good will, for example:

 On his/her general appearance.


 If you notice something new about the person’s appearance.
 When you visit someone’s house for the first time.
 When other people do their best.

Compliment is most often used to describe what individuals say to each other rather than a public or official
expression of praise.

To, been and into

How to use ‘to’


‘To’ has two functions.
1. First, as a preposition, in which case it always precedes a noun.
Examples:
 I’m going to the store
 He went to Italy
 This belongs to David
2. Secondly, to indicates an infinitive when it precedes a verb.
Examples:
 I need to study
 We want to help
 He’s going to eat

How to use ‘been’

Some writers occasionally confuse the wordbeen. As a rule, the word been is always used after have (in any form,
e.g., has, had, will have);

Examples:

 I have been busy.   


 Terry has being taking the stores to the shelter. 
(being cannot follow has or have)

How to use ‘into’

 Into is a preposition. In a sentence, the preposition  into will be part of a prepositional phrase consisting of  into +
its object + any modifiers of its objects. The entire phrase it is a part of will function adverbially to modify the verb
or verb phrase that precedes the phrase. 

Examples:
1. when he walked into the room, he found that the meeting had already

started. 
2. Put the toys into the basket. 
3. The pumpkin was turned into a carriage.
