PRESENTATION

7 rules.

B. During the lesson

8. Nouns denoting quantity and

amount such as number, half, part,
portion, and plenty may take a
singular or plural verb according to
their meaning.

Examples:
A number of books were destroyed during
the flood.

The number of books destroyed in the flood is

big.

9. When a relative pronoun is used as a

subject of a verb, the verb must agree
in person and number with the
antecedent of the pronoun.

Examples:
He is one of those men who talk much and
think little.

It is one of the most enjoyable cartoons that

are shown on television.

10. There is (was, has been) should be

used when the subject that follow is
singular; there are (were, have been,
when the subject that follows is plural

Examples:
There is a man at the gate.
There are children on the playground

11. Fractions take a singular verb if the

object of the following of-phrase is
singular; they take a plural verb if the
object of the following of phrase is
plural.

Examples:
Two-thirds of the unit has already been taken
up in class

One-third of the congressmen are out of the

country.

12. Quantities and sums or multiples of

numbers when expressing a single
idea may take a singular verb.

Examples:
Twelve inches is equivalent to one foot.

Nine times three is twenty-seven.

13. If the subjects are affirmative and

negative, the verb agrees in person and
number with the affirmative subject.

Examples:
Pete, not I, is the person to do the job.

I, not you, am to blame.

14. Remember that in the inverted word

order, the subject comes after the verb.

Example:

Why is the child crying?

Yes sir.
