character, setting, plot, conflict, point of view, and theme.

AWAD Contrast noun /ˈkänˌtrast/

AWAD and ASAD

the state of being strikingly different from something else ASAD

There is a big contrast between dry season and rainy season.

D. Pre-reading  Motivation Before we proceed to our lesson, let us have an activity first. I will present to
a game called 4 Pics One Word. You have 5 seconds to guess the mystery words. Raise your hand if you
know the answer. Ready, set, go! Ivy, What’s your answer?

(The students will raise their hands.)

It’s a bridge Sir Exactly. Here’s your chip. Next set.

Ready, set, go!

(The students will raise their hands.)

Domen, What’s your answer?

Very good. It is Wifi.

It’s WIFI Sir

Now, let’s move to our last set. Ready, Set, go! (The students will raise their hands.)

Lian, What is your answer? Correct. Here’s your chip. Now, can you tell me when do we use bridges?
Vilma, tell me your answer?
Very good. How about Wifi? Yes. Joshua

It’s glue Sir

(The students will raise their hands.) If we want to go one place to another we use bridge Sir. (The
students will raise their hands.) We connect to Wi-Fi if we what to explore the internet.

As for glue, what we do about it? Sean.

(The students will raise their hands.) Sir, we use glue to put things together.

Very good.

E. During Reading  Presentation of the New Lesson Certainly, Bridges, Wi-Fi and glue makes things
easier for us. But what do you notice about them?

(The students will raise their hands.)

Yes, Russel

“They connect things Sir.

Very Good observation. Let’s give him three claps. Just like bridges, glue and Wi-Fi, our topic for today
connects group of words with the same grammatical construction. It is called Coordinating Conjunctions.
Are you familiar with coordinating conjunctions?

Yes, Sir. We had it during our grade 7 English.

It is true. However, we are going to focus on how to use the in sentences. Are you ready to understand
Coordinating conjunctions better?

Yes, Sir

Coordinating conjunctions connect elements that are grammatically the same like two or more words, two
equal phrases, or two clauses. FANBOYS is the acronym for the 7 coordinating conjunctions.

Can you tell me what FANBOYS stands for?

Very good. Let’s start our discussion with FOR. Please read its meaning and example.

(The students will raise their hands.) Sir it stands for For, And, Nor, But, Or, Yet and So.

FOR – shows reason or purpose. (sometimes because can be used instead) Example: Everyone thought he
would lose for he was sick.

Why did they think he would lose?

Because he was sick, Sir.

Excellent. For is used to reason that ‘he is sick.’ Is it clear? Our next Conjunction is AND. Juliana read
the meaning and example.

Crystal Clear.

AND – connect two or more ideas with the same rank. Example: Joana took the exam and waited for the
result.

Thank you, Juliana. What did we connect? Very good. Here’s your chip. The conjunction ‘and’ connects
the 2 verb phrase. Is it clear?

(The students will raise their hands.) Sir, took the exam and waited for the result.

Crystal clear.

For third conjunction, I want Charlie to read the meaning and example.

NOR – shows a non-contrasting, negative idea. Example: Jeremy can’t play basketball nor watch
television.

Thank you, Charlie. What are the two phrases we connect?

(The students will raise their hands.) Can’t play basketball and watch television.

Can Josh play or watch?

No, Sir

Remember that Nor is used to show negative expressions.

Yes, Sir

Lovely, please read the next conjunction.

BUT – shows a contrast or exception. Example: I read the book but I don’t understand it.

Thank you, Lovely. In our example, ‘I passed the exam in English’ is it good or bad? You failed in Math.
Is it good or bad news? See how ‘BUT’ is used for contrast? In Mathematics, there is a positive and
negative integer, Am I right? In English there is also positive and negative. Whenever we use BUT one
statement should be positive or good while the other should be negative or bad.Do you understand how to
use the conjunction But? Is it clear now? Our next conjunction is ‘or.’ Angel please read it.

Good, Sir.
Bad news, Sir Yes, Sir

Crystal Clear. OR – connects two choices. Example: You will eat or you just want to sit there?

Or is quite easy to understand because it is simply about choices. What are the two choices in the
sentence? Eva Exactly. Here’s your chip. We always use OR for choices. Our next conjunction is Yet.
Now, Shonel can you please the slide.

Go to your class room and go to the library, Sir.

YET – shows exception and also contrast. Example: He write a News article yet he is a sport writer.

In the example sentence, Ezekiel won an MVP award for basketball. But his favorite sport is Chess. Did
you see the contrast? Yes, Sir For our last conjunction I want Sapphire to read the slide.

SO – shows consequences or result. Example: He copy my article so file a case of plagiarism.

Thank you, Sapphire What action happened first? He came late again. Now, what is the result of his
action? He was punished. Very good. Now give yourselves three claps. Do you have questions regarding
the use of coordinating conjunctions? Alright. Read this sentence. Riana is allergic to cats, yet she has
three

Sir, can you please give another example for yet?

of them.

Riana is allergic to cats, yet She has three of them.

What could be the problem with the subject?

Riana is allergic to cats

Very good. Now, what did she do even if she’s allergic to cats?

She has three of them.

So what does it show? Contrast, Sir Well done. Yet can be also used for contrast. Do you have any other
questions or clarifications? All clear?

None, Sir Crystal Clear.

Alright. Let’s proceed to our practice activity.
