MIET 2420 TUTORIAL 1 – ROLLING ELEMENT BEARINGS

In preparation for this tutorial refer to the Timken Ball Bearing Catalogue (extract included below).
Please review Chapter 15 of the class text and course notes.
Nomenclature: Summary relationships:
P = design load 𝑃𝑘 𝐿 = 𝑐𝑜𝑛𝑠𝑡𝑎𝑛𝑡
C = rated load (in Figure 2, the term CE is used) ∴ 𝑃𝑘 𝐿10 = 1𝐸6𝐶 𝑘 (using the 1E6 life stated in Figure 1)
L10 = design life (cycles) (for 90% reliability)
FR = bearing rated life (= 1E6 cycles in Figure 1) 3, 𝑓𝑜𝑟 𝑏𝑎𝑙𝑙
𝑘={
Lr = bearing life at reliability r (note here r is the 10/3 ≈ 3.33, 𝑓𝑜𝑟 𝑟𝑜𝑙𝑙𝑒𝑟
percentage of bearings not failed)
k = bearing type constant 𝐿𝑟 = 𝐾𝑟 𝐿10
Kr = life adjustment factor (Figure 2)

Q1. GENERAL BEARING DATA

Bearing number 9311K has been specified for a machine tool application:
a). Sketch a simple side elevation of the bearing in cross-section and indicate the physical dimensions
including tolerances.
b). What is the meaning of the fillet radius?
c). What is the dynamic load rating for 9311K bearings and how long will it survive in service?
d). What is the maximum static load that 9311K can be subjected to without Bruneling?
e). If the 9311K was specified for an automotive application where the wheel was driven (e.g. front
wheel on rear-wheel drive vehicle), would the tighter fit be specified for the inner, or outer race?

Q2. BEARING SELECTION FOR ARBITRARY RADIAL LOADS

Bearing number 9311K has been specified for a machine tool application:
a). How many cycles will 90% of 9311K bearings survive at a radial load of 7.8kN?
b). If the 9311K bearing was a roller type (with all other properties unchanged), how many cycles will
90% of bearings survive at a radial load of 7.8kN?
Q3. BEARING SELECTION FOR ARBITRARY LOADS AND RELIABILITY
Bearing number 9307K has been specified for a gearbox reduction drive shaft.
a). What is the maximum allowable filet radius for a shaft that will mate with 9307K?
b). If the radial load on the 9307K bearing is 5.5kN how many cycles would the bearing be rated for?
c). If the required reliability of the 9307K bearing is 99% at a load of 5.5kN how many cycles would the
bearing be rated for? Use the reliability factor adjustment table below.

Q4. GENERAL BEARING DESIGN

We are to design a pump shaft to have a 90% chance of being sound after 50,000 hours running at
1450 RPM. The spur gear on the pump shaft imposes a lateral load of 2kN. The mass of the shaft and
gear imposes a thrust load of 0.5kN along the shaft centreline (image below).
a). How many rotations will the pump shaft complete in its design life?
b). Draw a free body diagram (FBD) and calculate the loads acting on the two bearings.

BEARING “A” DESIGN

c). Does bearing “A” accommodate radial loads and thrust loads?
d). What dynamic load rating is required for bearing “A”?
e). What is the smallest bearing from the 9300K series that can be specified for bearing “A”? For this
bearing what is the maximum static load that can be applied without damage?
f). What dynamic load rating will we require for a reliability of 95%?

BEARING “B” DESIGN

c). Does bearing “B” accommodate radial loads and BEARING “B”
thrust loads?
d). What dynamic load rating is required for bearing 100mm
(Fixed)

“B”? (Use the Ball bearing Equivalent load equations as

2kN

required for radial and thrust loads).

e). What is the smallest bearing from the 9300K series
that can be specified for bearing “B”? For this bearing
SHAFT
PUMP

what is the maximum static load that can be applied 0.5kN

without damage?
f). What dynamic load rating will we require for a 200mm
BEARING “A”

reliability of 95%?
