A. Identify what type of claims are the following statements then explain your answer. Provide a box
for your explanation.
1. Decreasing carbon dioxide emissions from car exhaust, manufacturing processes, fertilizers, and
landfills, while slowing deforestation, may help slow the process of global warming.
Fact. because it is true that this process may help to slowdown the process of global warming. And this situation
is arguable.

2. It’s better to apply good nutritional choices at home than teach them at school, because good nutrition
then becomes ingrained in the child’s experience.
Value. Because it uses the word “better” in the situation that is a proof to identify that it is a type of claim of
value.

3. Just as smoking ads have been banned in order to decrease the urge to engage in an unhealthy behavior,
soda ads should be banned for the same reason.
Value. Because just like in number 3, it uses the word “as” in the situation that is a proof to identify that it is a
type of claim of value.

4. Parents must not only be aware of how their children are using social media, but also understand the
potential positive and negative impact of social media.
Policy. Because it said that it’s a “must” not only be aware of how their children are using social media.

5. The city’s board of education should institute an honors program not only for senior high school
students, but for elementary and junior high school students as well for fair educational system.
Policy. Because it states that the city board of education “should” institute an honors program which shows that
it is a type of claim of policy.

from real-life experience and are general enough to be applicable to most people. Read each quotation
below and respond to the questions which follow.

It is a claim of value because the character is more important than reputation.
Reputation often passes for character because it is more easily seen, but it is not real.

It is a claim of fact because Lies based on stories that are widely known and believed are more damaging than a
straightforward lie told by an individual.

How does the way the quote is written make it more persuasive?
Presenting the negative first by describing what the great enemy is NOT then turning it back to what the great
enemy IS makes. All these techniques help make this sentence memorable and effective.
