What is Organizational Communication?
 It is the exchange of idea, information, facts, believes, attitude between two or
more individuals through shared system of symbol.
 Communication organization happen in organizations through:
sending emails, talk on the phone , make a meetings , conversation and
presentation(verbal and non-verbal).
 Communication has shaped by the structure of the organizations (container);
for example physical container such as paper message.
or separately such as calling by phone from distance area.
 Give the right information to right people is very critical and must be clear,
simple, and precise.
 Different people interpret the exact same message very differently ( So what
you say is less important Than how you say it).
 To study the organization communication we must study the fundamental
social process in our society.
 If organization don't communication the right information to the right people
at the right time this cause destruction of many community services and
misunderstand.
 One of breakdown of communication is dealing with wrong people or using
wrong language.

Communication and its types:


Three major basis of communication:

1. On the Basis of Organizational Structure or Relationship.


2. On the Basis of Flow or Direction.
3. On the Basis of Methods or Media Used or Expression.

Formal Communication:

 Communication that which takes place through the formal channels and
mostly it is written in nature .
 This follows the hierarchy and structured established by the management .
 Members of the enterprise are expected to communicate with one another
strictly as per channels laid down in the structure .
Informal Communication:

 Communication arising out of all those arising communication that fall outside
formal structure.
 It arises due to the personal needs of the members of an organization.
 Informal communication is very spontaneous multidimensional and is of high
speed in nature.
 It often works in clusters of people.

Informal Communication: (advantages)

1) Very fast and suitable to places where formal communication can't be used.
2) It may help involving more people in decision making.
3) An opportunity to express fears, doubts and grievances.

Informal Communication: (disadvantages)

1) Informal communication consists of facts, half truths ,rumors and distorted


information.
2) It is not possible to fix the responsibility for its origin or flow of information.

Flow of Direction – Downward Communication:

Communication which flow from top management to last leg of the


organization is called as downward communication.
It involves circulars, notices, instructions, memos, handbook etc.

Flow of Direction-Upward Communication:

Upward communication means the flow of information from the lower levels
of the organization to the higher levels of authority.
It includes opinions, ideas, suggestions, complaints, grievances, appeals,
reports, etc.

Flow of Direction Lateral Communication:

The transmission of information and understanding between people on the


same level of organization hierarchy is called the horizontal communication.
Based On Media Choice- Written Communication:

 Written communication implies transmission of message in black and white.


 It includes diagrams, pictures, graphs, etc.
 To be effective, written communication should be clear, concise, correct and
complete.

Based On Media Choice – Oral Communication:

 In every organization, a great deal of information is exchanged orally and it is


generally preferred to written communication.

Based On Media Choice – Non Verbal:

 Communication does not mean merely written or oral messages.


 Expression through body parts is known as gestural or non- verbal
communication.
