Questions & Problems

PART ONE: Questions & graphs

1. Define “rate of a reaction” (according to Guldberg and Waage).
2. What factors affect the rate of reaction?
3. How does concentration affect the rate of reaction? Explain for both; irreversible and
reversible reactions.
4. How does temperature affect the reaction rate? Why does the rate increases upon rise
on the temperature?
5. How does catalyst affect the rate of reaction?
6. What is activation energy? What is activated complex?
7. How does collision theory explain the effect of concentration of reactants and
temperature on reaction rate?
8. How does activated complex theory explain the effect of temperature on reaction rate?
9. Does every collision between reacting particles lead to formation of product/s?
What conditions are required for the collisions to be effective?
10. Define the following terms: catalyst, inhibitor and enzyme.
11. List all the properties of catalysts.
12. Why does activation energy decrease when a catalyst is used?
13. Write rate expressions in terms of change in concentration of reactant/s and product/s
for the following reactions:
a) PCl3(g) + Cl2(g) = PCl5(g) b) 2SO2(g) + O2(g) = 2SO3(g)
c) 4NH3(g) + 3O2(g) = 2N2(g) + 6H2O(g) d) 2NH3(g) = 3H2(g) + N2(g)

14. Complete the graph and explain its trend. (The explanation should contain the
following details; what dependence is shown with the graph, the type of reaction this curve
refers to, the type of the process according to the thermal effect, catalyzed or non-
catalyzed reaction and short explanation of the graph’s trend.)

 In 2 L container, CO and H2 gases react with each other. After half minute 0,5
moles of methanol, CH3OH is produced. Write the equation which adequately
describes this reaction. Express and find the reaction rate in terms of change in
concentration of a product.
CO(g) + 2H2(g) ⇌ CH3OH(g) Result: (CH3OH) = 0,008(3) mol/Ls
 In 2 L container NOCl gas decomposes into NO and Cl 2 gases. After 5 minutes
0.2 moles of NOCl completely decomposes into mentioned products. Write the
reaction equation of the process. Express and find the reaction rate in terms of
change in concentration of a reactant.

moles of ammonia is produced. Express and find the reaction rate in terms of
change in concentration of reactants and product.
