UNIT 2
Part 1.
Applicant I'm really sorry I'm late, I had rather a hard time locating your office.
Interviewer That's quite all right. Please have a seat. I'd like to start off by asking
you what kind of work you've been doing at the hotel in Piccadilly.
Applicant Well, for the past eight months I've been working at the front desk
there, which means that I've been handling the booking of guests, and
2.(a) Applying for a job generally answering phone inquires.
(Listen & read) Part 2.
Interviewer Now in this hotel we use the Receptel system, which I assume you
know is a computerised booking system. Are you familiar with it -
would you have an idea as to how to use it?
Applicant I don't think I would know right away how to use it. I've never had to
use that particular type of booking system. But I have done office
works in the past and used word processors and several office
computers, so I'm quite sure I'd catch on really fast.
Part 3.
Interviewer Now perhaps you could tell me why you want to give up your present
job and join us here?
Applicant Well, I don't, I don't feel that a small private hotel in Piccadilly really is
what I'm looking for. The hours are too long and I don't really earn
much.
Interviewer You say the hours are very long. You mean you'd rather not work
long hours?
Applicant Oh no, no, it's not that, it's not that I don't like hard work or anything
like that, no, it's, it's that the tasks are always the same, so I don't feel
that my qualifications are being put to good use.
Part 4.
Interviewer Now, before I end this interview, I would like to ask if you have any
questions to ask me.
Applicant Yes. Could you be more specific about the job description of general
assistant?
Interviewer It means more or less what it says really. It involves dealing with any
day-to-day problems that turn up, not just booking people in and
welcoming guests but being, if you like, part of junior management,
helping us out day-to-day. We would expect that.
Applicant I see. And I'd have vacations, would I?
Interviewer You would have holidays, but perhaps we should not tackle that until
after you've been hired ... Well, thank you very much for coming along
today, and we'll let you know when we've made the final selection.
Applicant Thank you.

Christopher Yes. Angeline, I would suggest you actually speak to him about how
you feel - see if you can convince him to come out with you, let's
say, for one or two nights a week, and then you could offer to stay at

compromise, that's the thing - work at it and reach an agreement.
John Well Angeline, if I can make a point here, what I would suggest is that
perhaps you could arrange to go out with some friends on your own.
You could go for a drink, shopping, to the cinema or just for a walk.
If he wants to spend time at home, that's quite all right, but I don't
think you ought to let him stop you from doing what you really want.
