ABORTION OF THE DISABLED BABY

Abortion is a loss of pregnancy due to the premature exit of the products of

conception (the fetus, fetal membranes, and placenta) from the uterus due to any cause. In my
opinion, abortion should be allowed if the baby would suffer from physical or mental
handicaps in terms of the decision of mother, causing difficulties throughout the life of the
parents and child, and bringing great responsibility.
Firstly, abortion is the decision of the mother. We should show respect to the choice
of the mother. For example, if the mother thinks she cannot bring up a child with physical or
mental handicaps, she should be able to the right of abortion. To summarize, we should show
respect to mothers' decision.
Abortion of the disabled baby can cause difficulties throughout the life of the parents
and child. In my opinion, one of these difficulties is financial difficulties. To exemplify,
medical equipment is expensive so that the parents would be in difficulty to pay for medical
equipment. Parents also would be in difficulty to pay for special education for their disabled
child because of the child’s physical or mental handicap. On the other hand, I think that
teaching something to a mentally disabled child is hard and this is another difficulty for the
child. For example, teaching math to a mentally disabled child may be hard because he or she
couldn’t understand abstract things. To summarize, both parents and the child would suffer
from financial difficulties and learning difficulties throughout their life.
Lastly, in my opinion, it is a great responsibility because the parents should spend
much time to bring up their child. For example, teach him or her how to eat or take a bath on
their own is difficult because of his or her mental or physical handicap. As a result, parents
need much time to teach him or her how to live on their own. To sum up, the child must
know how to live on his or her own and teaching him or her how to live on their own is a
great responsibility.
To summarize, abortion of the baby with mental or physical handicaps should be
allowed with the perspective of the showing respect to mother’s decision, causing financial
and educational difficulties, and bringing great responsibility for the parents. I hope that in
the future, mothers would be allowed to abortion if their child will suffer from the physical or
mental handicap in his or her life.
