Operating Preface Software from a Windows 2000 or

Windows XP User Group Account

Problem Statement
When using Microsoft® Windows® 2000, accounts belonging to the Users group do not have sufficient
permissions to operate the Preface™ software. When using Windows XP, accounts belonging to the
Limited group do not have sufficient permissions to operate the Preface software.
Note: On both Windows 2000 and Windows XP, the printer driver must also have its privileges correctly
set. See the printer driver documentation for further details.

Cause
The Users group under Windows 2000 and Limited group under Windows XP are described as having the
permissions necessary to run Windows 2000/Windows XP certified applications. Legacy applications may
not be capable of running. This is the case with Preface software.

Potential Remedies
1) (Recommended for Windows 2000) All Preface user accounts can be added to the Power user
group. This group is described as having the necessary privileges to run legacy applications.
(Recommended for Windows XP Professional) All Preface user accounts can be added to the
Administrator user group. This group has the necessary privileges to run legacy applications.
(Required for Windows XP Home Edition) All Preface user accounts must be added to the
Administrator user group. This group has the necessary privileges to run legacy applications.
2) (Alternative) File and registry permissions can be modified to provide the access needed by the
Preface software. This can be done for individual user accounts, all users, or a group of users created
to represent Preface users. The steps below assume that all users will be given the necessary
permissions.
Note: On Windows XP Professional, the file system must be NTFS and Simple File Sharing must be
disabled. Follow these steps to disable Simple File Sharing:
a. Click Start, and then click My Computer.
b. On the Tools menu, click Folder Options, and then click the View tab.
c. In the Advanced Settings section, clear the Use simple file sharing (Recommended)
check box.
d. Click OK.
Modifying File Permissions:
a. Log onto the system using an account with Administrator privileges.
b. Using Explorer, navigate to the Preface directory (C:\Program Files\Datacard\Preface).
c. Right mouse click on the Preface folder and select Properties from the menu.
d. Click on the Security tab to display the following:

group from the displayed list.
f. With the Users group selected, select either the Modify or the Write checkbox. When one is
selected the other automatically becomes selected.
g. Click the OK button to save the changes.
Modifying Registry Permissions:
h. Run the utility regedit.exe from the Windows directory.
i. If it is not already expanded, double-click on the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE folder to expand it.

n. Select the Allow checkbox for the Set Value and Create Subkey permissions.
o. Click OK on each of the three permission windows to save the changes.
p. Click on the Datacard folder under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SOFTWARE and repeat steps k
through o.
q. On Windows XP Professional, start Preface Designer and select Display Printer Fonts. Failure to
do so may result in the message “An unnamed file was not found” the first time a text field’s font
is modified. If this message appears, click OK and continue.
The computer is now properly configured to run Preface software from accounts with only Users-group
permissions.
Note: On Windows XP Professional, clicking Choose Language may display the message, “an unnamed
file was not found”. If the message appears, click OK and continue.
Note: These changes do not eliminate the need to use an account with Administrator-level privileges
until the Preface software is licensed. This limitation is documented in the Preface readme.rtf file.
