W
e celebrated the feast of Mary Help of Christians on 24th
May. On Oct 7, 1571 after the battle of Lepanto which was
won as the whole Church prayed to Mary Help of Christians
for protection, and the Turkish fleet was defeated through Mary’s
intercession, Pope Pius V inserted the title Mary Help of Christians in to
the litany of Our Lady. Our Lady was again invoked under the title Help
of Christians early in the nineteenth century, when Pope Pius VII was
arrested by Napoleon, for not complying with many of his demands to
diminish the Church’s privileges
The Second Vatican Council, in the Constitution on the Church, cites
this title of Mary and explains it in the context of Mary’s maternal role,
“By her maternal charity, Mary cares for the sisters and brothers of her
Son who still wander through this world in the midst of dangers and
difficulties until they are led to the happiness of their heavenly home.”
We are going to celebrate another important feast of Mother Mary
on 15th August - Assumption, which falls on the Independence Day
of India. These twin celebrations, but remind us of one great truth of
liberation. Independence is celebrated as freedom from foreign rule and
domination to self-rule and governance; and the Assumption may be
seen as a freedom from this limited and incomplete life to the bliss of
eternal and perpetual life. The verses which make up the Gospel on the

EDITORIAL
feast of Assumption are commonly known as "The Magnificat" or Mary's
hymn of praise which also speaks about liberation. The confidence with
which Mary sings this song runs through the entire hymn. 
As Indians and Christians, we feel the pain and question the freedom of
individuals when children and women are raped and dehumanized even
at homes which is supposed to be the safest place for them, when justice
is delayed or denied to the victims of abuses, violence and atrocities,
when female feticide is so high and girl child is seen as a burden rather
than a blessing, when the other’s presence causes unrest to the individual
and when one is afraid to live as oneself.
For Don Bosco, Mary Help of Christians was the ever-present Mother
who helps her children daily, going to their rescue and leading them to
Jesus. "Be devoted to Mary Help of Christians", he would often say, "and
you will see what miracles are!" She always listens to us, she is always
close to us, and being Mother of the Son, participates in the power of the
Son and in his goodness.
  As we celebrate Independence Day and Assumption of our
Mother Mary, let us invoke the help of Mary who was freed from
earthly bondage to heavenly glory. May she bless every citizen to
work for peace, prosperity and true freedom of hearts and minds!

celebrated to pay respect and homage
to mothers for their unstinted love and
support to their children, commitment to
the family and contributions to the society.
Way back in1994 Mr Woodrow Wilson, the
then President of United States of America
exhorted his countrymen to celebrate
the second Sunday of May every year as
Mothers’ Day. Within few years this idea
was welcomed all over the world and now
more than forty countries are celebrating
Mothers’ Day, though on different dates.
Most of the countries have chosen March
or May for celebrating the day. In USA,
Russia and India Mothers’ Day is celebrated
with much fanfare on the second Sunday
of May each year. In many catholic
countries mothers bring their children to
the Church on the day for attending Holy
Mass and after receiving Holy Communion,
they throng around the altar and offer
thanks giving prayers and reaffirm their
faith in the church. In UK it is customary for
Christians to visit their home church and
mothers, and offer them flowers, sweets
and greeting cards. Often parish priests
explain the importance of motherhood and
the greatness of family life to the believers
on the day. The more the mothers are like
the Virgin Mary, the more respect and love
they get from their children. On seeing the
catholic family around the altar the heart of
Virgin Mary reverberate with joy.

Mother. Alexander the Great had admitted
that the countries he conquered and the
immense wealth he had amassed were not
sufficient to repay the debt he owed his
mother for carrying him in her womb for ten
months. Sri Sankaracharya has said that even
if he washed his mother’s feet for seventy
births, it would not compensate for even a
single second she cared for him.
A society that does not respect motherhood
is underdeveloped and barbarian. We live
in a world where infants to elder women
are subjected to mental as well as physical
torture. Another agonising scene today is
the proliferation of old age homes where
the aged parents, who deserve love and care
from their kin, are dumped there and left to
the mercy of the keepers. Equally alarming
is the increase in the number of mothers
who desert the duties and responsibilities
attached to motherhood and connive even
to kill their offspring. They seem to forget
the fact that children are gift of God and they
have no right to take their lives. If St Mother
Teresa was alive, she would have requested
mothers of unwanted children to hand over
them to her so that she could take care.
On this Mother’s Day let us pray to Almighty
that good sense prevail on the delinquent.

guidance and inspiration for mothers.

CONCRETE STEPS FOR EMPOWERMENT
OF LAITY AND WOMEN IN THE CHURCH
1. The Terms - Laity - Men and women and women religious and

Concrete steps -  When identifying the persons who are to take
concrete steps for empowerment, we need to keep in mind that
empowerment does not take place in a bureaucratic business
structure with one party empowering the other. Rather it is a
facilitation by which the persons being empowered discover hidden
capacities within themselves, and are given encouragement,
appropriate awakening events, and arenas for expressing their newly-
discovered inner power, togetherness and ethereal outreach. From
the beginning, this process involves a Spirit-led dialogue combined
with self-awareness, vision-expansion, creativity and scope for
experimentation. Empowerment needs to be a collaborative effort,
with initiatives coming from Laity and Women themselves, and
carried out by them in tandem with pastors and bishops. Initiatives
can also be made by bishops and pastors, to be carried out by all
sections of the Church communities. The leaders of Small Christian
Communities, Pastoral councils, and Diocesan Councils are often lay
women and men who inspire their groups to joint action and service

In the Church - As Laity includes women, men and children, and
Women includes religious women and those in other forms of
consecrated life, their empowerment in the Church will include
training programmes for men, women and children, so that
their human identity and ecclesial identity are integrated in their
leadership tasks, professions, works, prayer life, liturgies, missions
and ministries.
The concrete steps in the Church need to be planned together
democratically by all sections of the people of God. Moving from
dominant systems to lateral systems in Church circles will bring
empowerment goals on fast track. We also need to visualise
the ecumenical and universal dimensions of Church in order
to collaborate inclusively with members of sister Churches,
with people of different faiths and with people of no faith.

SIMPLIFY GRATITUDE
(A short and sweet guide to saying thank you)
I t’s hard to complain when you are expressing thanks.
Gratitude overrides self-pity, FOMO (fear of missing out) and
other feelings of lack or not enoughness. Sometimes though,
in the chaos of life, we don’t put our gratitude into action and
gratitude in action is powerful. It lifts you and everyone around
you. Like most things, if we don’t keep it simple, our thanks can
get lost in the shuffle.
Here are a few really simple recommendations in this short
and sweet guide to saying thank you.
DON’T WAIT TO SAY THANK YOU.
I can think of so many times when I meant to send a thank you
text, or note and thought, “I’ll do it later.” Of course when later
showed up, I’d think, “now it’s too late” or I’d forget all together.
Put your gratitude into action as soon as possible.
• When you want to thank a friend, text or call them immediately.
Even if you are in a hurry, take 45 seconds and say, “Thank you. DON’T WAIT FOR THINGS TO BE GOOD TO BE GRATEFUL.
I’m so grateful you are in my life.”
• If you are thrilled with your service at a restaurant, thank the thanks even when you aren’t feeling your best, or things aren’t
waiter or manager before leaving
• When you are moved to say thank you, just say it.
WRITE DOWN YOUR GRATITUDE.
Every morning when you wake up, jot down a few things you
are grateful for. Keep it simple. For example, I’m grateful for my
bed, hot tea and sunshine. Use a notebook or something more
structured like

You have enough to remember everyday, so make the background
on your phone a reminder to put gratitude into action, or put a post-

It’s always a good time to be grateful and that means expressing
going your way. Even in the dark times, there are things to be
thankful for. It may be more challenging to feel or express your
gratitude, but then it’s even more important to do it.
Expressing gratitude is a practice and if you keep it simple,
it will be more meaningful than you can imagine (for you and
everyone around you). It takes time and consistent effort.

O f course, no one wants or enjoys suffering and hardship. They

are, however, an inevitable part of our temporal life on earth.
I know this may sound funny, but difficulties and hardships can
be blessings in disguise. They can be a catalyst for achieving new
heights in our personal and spiritual lives.
In times of difficulty and hardship, we naturally turn to God and
seek His help. If everything were always wonderful, do you think
we would need God or seek Him? Probably not! C.S. Lewis once
noted, "God whispers to us in our pleasures, speaks to us in our
conscience, but shouts in our pains: It is His megaphone to rouse
a deaf world."
If everything were always perfect, we would become lazy,
hedonistic, and selfish. It is through life's suffering and hardships
that we are given the opportunity to develop our trust in God and
experience His love for us. For, He really does love and care for each
one of us (see Matthew 6:25-33).
God wants us to embrace the truth that our problems, difficulties,
and disappointments are storms on the sea of life that are not
meant to sink us, but to sanctify us. Each "storm" is an opportunity
to grow closer to God. As we grow closer to God, the more we love
Him. And the more we love Him, the more we desire to serve Him
and others. Then, the more we serve Him and others, the more like
Him we will become.
Picture raw gold as it appears when mined from the earth. It is
dull, dark, and clumpy. It doesn't glitter or shine. Its beauty is only
potential. Only after it is melted and poured into a mold, does it
make beautiful jewelry. In the same way, God carefully allows the
trials of this life to be an opportunity to "melt me, mold me, make
me" more into His image (see Hebrews 12:10). May we always
remember and take comfort in the fact that: "Temporal trials are
peoples' path to heavenly holiness."
We should keep in mind that every problem is a character-building
opportunity, and the more difficult it is, the greater is its character-
building potential. Swimming against the current makes us stronger.
However, this growth in character is not automatic. Many people
become bitter, rather than better, when faced with suffering.
Adversity can either make us or break us, depending on our
reaction to the situation.
It helps to remember that God never gives us more than we can
handle (see 1 Corinthians 10:13). We will never have to suffer more
than we can endure, especially if we have faith and trust in God.
Also, we should remember that every trial, suffering, or hardship
will come to an end. It surely will. In fact, if we have patience and
trust in God's care, we are often able to look back on our past trials
with thanksgiving and appreciation. Really. We are often given a
real joy and peace (see Philippians 4:6-7).
Jesus' suffering and death on the cross set an example for us to
follow. He willingly took up His cross and suffered for our good, so
that we might be able to attain eternal salvation in heaven. This
understanding (called "the redemptive nature of suffering" by
the Church) has been an integral part of Christian discipleship for
centuries.
Thomas A. Kempis wrote a book over 500 years ago entitled
The Imitation of Christ. This book, which has become a Christian
classic, describes the spiritual value of suffering and hardship.
He writes, "When you are troubled and afflicted, then is the time
to gain merit. You must pass through fire and water before you
come to refreshment... Submit yourself to the will of God, and bear
whatever shall happen to you for the glory of Jesus Christ, because
after winter comes summer; after the night the day returns; after
the storm comes a great calm... In the cross (suffering) there is the
completion of virtue; in the cross there is the perfection of sanctity
(holiness). There is no health for the soul nor hope of eternal life,
except in the cross. Therefore, take up your cross and follow Jesus
and you will attain eternal life. If you are his companions in his
suffering, you shall also be partakers in his glory." The most difficult
roads in life are the ones that most often lead to the most beautiful
views.
God truly does love and care for each of us. Even the sufferings
and hardships in our lives are signs of God's love and special
opportunities for spiritual growth. May we always see the trials
and difficulties of this life as opportunities to grow closer to God,
to grow in our faith and trust in God, and to grow more one with
Him in holiness. May this understanding always give us patience,

Meet Krishna, the Kerala girl who

went to her Board Exam riding a horse
S tudents writing the Board exams have several aspirations.
Topping their school, getting a good aggregate, or at least scoring
enough to help them secure college admission. But is that all? Nope
(pun intended), Krishna would say. She had a unique aspiration that AGRA REGIONAL MEETING HELD AT JAIPUR PASTORAL CENTRE ON 1ST & 2ND JUNE
you'd never guess - she wished to ride a horse to attend her Board
exams!
Recently, the video of CA Krishna, who is from Mala, a town in
Thrissur district, Kerala  riding a horse to school for attending the
SSLC examination went viral.  A student at the Holy Grace Academy,
Mala, Krishna said that she rode the horse to school on the last day
of her examination. "I was nurturing the hope of riding the horse to
attend the Board examination for quite some time. On the last day
of exams, it was the Social Studies paper, and I chose to ride the
horse to school on that day," Krishna says. Not everyone thought
this was a great idea, but Krishna would not be dissuaded.
"Many had said that it will be a risky affair to ride the horse on
a Board exam day, considering the traffic and other issues. But I
thought it was all right. I've been training in horse riding from the
time I was studying in the seventh standard. I have gone to school
riding the horse on some other occasions in the past. Last year also, wish," says Ajay Kalindi. However, the indulgent father adds that he

 HONORING THE DALIT AND TRIBAL CATHOLIC GIRL TOPPERS IN SECONDARY AND
SENIOR SECONDARY EXAMS -2019

n 2018, the CBCI Council for Women along with the CBCI
Offices for Dalit and Tribal affairs awarded girl students
from the Dalit and Tribal communities, who come under
the BPL category and scored highest marks in the 10th and
12th grade from each state. It was first of its kind from the
CBCI level and it encouraged and motivated the girls in
different Dioceses. We continue the same this year too. The
applications should be collected at the Diocesan level and
sent to the National office.
Students from the following boards would be honoured:
1. State board
2. CBSE or ICSE.
Eligibility:
• Candidate should be Dalit or Tribal Catholic girl
• The students should be under the BPL category.
• Should have written Secondary or Senior Secondary Exams
in the year 2018-19
Procedure:
• Only the details of the Topper (of class X & XII) in each
Diocese needs to send to the National office
• Eligible candidates should fill in the prescribed form

Dalit and one Tribal girl from each Diocese will be collected
at the National Office, from which the National Toppers
&State Toppers will be selected andhonoured with a cash
award together with a shield and a certificate. The decision
of the selection board will be final.
