HYF01 ASSESSMENT 1

NAME; JACOB KUDU

STUDENT ID NO; S11112326
Part A. Essay

The topic that I have chosen for this major assessment is the story about my ancestor warrior
Kalevalaka. He is a warrior from the Varisi area in the north eastern part of Choiseul
province, and of the Vuruvachu tribe. The assessment is aligned to module 2 indigenous
leadership specifically Melanesia democracies. Kalevalaka is a notorious warrior and skilful
fighter during the headhunting era on the island of Choiseul province. He was hired by chief
Malasa of Sasamuqa village, of Kubozo tribe to defend and protect his people and land
against rival tribes and enemies who were attacking them. It is through his fighting that he
earned the statues as a big man in my village. The story of this brave warrior is being passed
down from generation to generation on my paternal side through words of mouth.

This topic is significant to me as I learn more about my ancestor Kalevalaka, to have a better
understanding of what really happened during the warfare and to learn more about my
genealogy and culture in the headhunting days. This topic is important to my community the
people of Sasamuqa as it tells the story of how Kalevalaka and his warriors saved the people
from possible extinction.

The five things I am going to find out in this research are; (1).Tracing my genealogy to
Kalevalaka by looking and studying the family tree. (2). Find out what was given to
Kalevalaka as form of compensation for his warriors who died and the processes involved.
(3). Find out more about the history of warfare in the Solomon Islands and how it relates to
the indigenous Melanesian style of leadership. (4). Know my place and inheritance as a
descendent of Kalevalaka. (5). Differences in the leadership structure in traditional Melanesia
setting compared to modern Melanesia.

To conclude this assessment is based on module 2: indigenous leadership under Melanesia

democracies and is about the warrior Kalevalaka. How he gained prestige and merit through
warfare and the processes involved.
