WORKSHOP
IDEAL DIODE - NATURAL AND COMPLETE RESPONSES
1. Learning Outcomes
ˆ Will be able to tell theory of semiconductors.
ˆ Will be able to recognize types of diode, explain basic terms related with diodes and tell the operating
principle of diodes.
ˆ Will be able to analyze different diode circuits.

2. Exercises
1. A remote control battery, whose Thevenin equivalent comprises a 1.8V voltage source and a 1-Ohm resistor,
is connected to the terminals of an ideal diode. Test the following situations:
a. What are the diode current and voltage when the positive battery terminal is connected to the anode?
b. What are the diode current and voltage when the positive terminal of the battery is connected to the
cathode?
2. Using the Schottky Diode Equation, determine the current in the diode at 20◦ C for a silicon diode with
Is = 35nA. The forward current is 1A with a forward bias of 0.6V . Repeat the procedure with a temperature
of 75◦ C. Use the Is relation seen in class.
3. The Figure 1 represents a circuit for charging a 12V battery. The voltage source Vs (t) is a sine wave with a
peak amplitude of 24V .
a. Find the fraction of each cycle that the diode conducts.
b. Determine the peak value of the diode current.
c. Determine the maximum reverse bias voltage that appears at the diode terminals.

mathematical function.
4. Design a circuit similar to the one in Figure 1 in which the current flows to the 12V battery 20% of the time
of the period of the sinusoid signal and has an average value of 100mA.
a. What peak-to-peak voltage of the sine wave is required?
b. What voltage and what resistance are required?
c. What peak reverse voltage does the diode resist?

d. What commercial diode would you use?
5. Consider the circuit in Figure 2. Means of a wire can use a signaling system in conjunction with the common
ground return. The voltage input v s (t) can take the values: +3v, 0v, −3v. What is the status of the lamps
for each input value?
