Kurekchay Treaty: as indicator of surrender at discretion or the best choice

in front of strong enemy

The Russian Empire tried to occupy Azerbaijani lands from the beginning of the
19th century. Taking advantage of the division of Azerbaijan into khanates, the
tsarist government used both arms and contracts in the process. Commander-in-
chief of Russian troops in the Caucasus Sisianov began to exert military-diplomatic
pressure on the Karabakh khanate after the occupation of Ganja. It is clear from
Sisianov's correspondence with Ibrahim khan from Karabakh that the khan tried to
conclude the contract on favorable terms.

At that time Iran was also attacking Karabagh khanate. So that’s why, Karabakh
khan Ibrahimkhalil khan asked Sisianov for military assistance to prevent the
attack of Iranian troops and promised to help and remain loyal to Russia. Excited
by the Karabakh khan's agreement with Russia, the Iranian palace sent a group to
Karabakh. But Ibrahimkhalil khan defeated him. After this victory of the Karabakh
khan, Sisianov sent a group to Karabakh at his request. At the same time, he
demanded an accelerated response to Russia's subordination. Ibrahimkhalil khan
agreed to meet with Sisianov in order to preserve the khanate. So, on May 14 1805
the Kurekchay treaty was signed with the participation of Sheki khan Salim khan.

I think it was the best choice that Ibrahim Khalil khan can choose at that time.
Because Iran was already attacking and if he would not agree with Russians, they
would attack too. So he had no choice but to accept to sign a treaty in order to
protect his khanate.
