Despite the American Nurses Association’s (ANA) efforts to address optimal working
conditions for a better delivery of health care, the aging workforce seems to be one of the main
reasons why our healthcare system is challenged. Appropriate nurse staffing is needed to be able
to deliver nursing care effectively. With this, ANA continues to provide “the best in evidence-
based policy, practice, products, advocacy and professional development to ensure safe staffing
and transform health and health care delivery” (“Nurse Staffing”, n.d.).

SUMMARY:
Apparently, the problem with the workforce lies within the deferred retirements of
veteran nurses. According to ANA Health Economist Peter McMenamin, PhD, “they represent
40 percent or more of employed nurses, and they can't defer retirement forever” (“Nursing
Shortage Outlook”, n.d.). The issue here is to employ young and capable nurses to continue with
the demands of the new health care system while providing a rewarding retirement for the aging
nurses. A continued professional development is also needed to meet the challenges of healthcare
