Track feeding Railway Transformers
AC-AC Railway Feeder Non-Autotransformer

Product Range
– Power up to 120 MVA
– Voltage up to 400 kV

Applications and Benefits

– They have 1 or 3 phases and are used to feed single or
multiple rail lines. Scott, LeBlanc, V-V, modified Woodbridge,
Scalene Scott or Delta-Wye are typical connections of those
transformers in case of 3-phase supply.
– They are used to reduce the degree of voltage imbalance on
the 3-phase feeding system caused by the single-phase
traction loads
– Their strong structure and design are made to resist
repeated short circuits during operation
– They ensure maximum reliability for continuous operations

Track feeding Railway Transformers
AC-AC Railway Feeder Autotransformer

Product Range
– Power from 4 to 15 MVA
– Voltage up to 220 kV

Applications and Benefits

– They are typical single-phase auto-connected transformers
– They are mainly used in modern high-power railway catenary
systems fed with two phases, and generally applied to all rail
system feeding high-speed trains
– They are more useful where distance between catenary
feeder substations is long
– They can reach high efficiency and lower loss due to higher
voltage
– They help to reduce interference with communication
systems because of better collection of returning stray
currents

Track feeding Railway Transformers
AC-AC Static Frequency Converter Transformer

Product Range
– Power from 10 to 120 MVA
– Voltage up to 400 kV
– Frequency 16.7, 25, 50 or 60 Hz
Applications and Benefits
– They supply power to a static frequency converter that
allows the connection of 3-phase AC public grid (at 50 or 60
Hz) to 1-phase AC rail power grid of same or different
frequency (60, 50, 25 or 16.7 Hz)
– They are integral part of converter station and are suitable to
provide bi-directional power transfer to last-generation
multilevel converters in addition to conventional converters
– They can be used in medium-voltage grids with limited short
circuit power thereby reducing connection costs or avoiding
new supply lines

Track feeding Railway Transformers
AC-DC Rectifier/Converter Transformer

Product Range
– Power up to 8 MVA
– Voltage up to 36 kV

Applications and Benefits

– They are designed to provide bi-directional power transfer to
DC-operated mass transit systems and railway lines through
6- or 12-pulse traction rectifiers
– Their modular and compact design can fit any customer
requirements
– They have high capacity and high overload capability for
reliable and low maintenance operations as result of robust
mechanical and electrical design
– They are suitable for flood-risk environments and can be
designed to reduce fire risk, to withstand earthquake and
with protections against vandalism

Track feeding Railway Transformers
Isolation Transformer

Product Range
– Power up to 10 MVA
– Voltage typically 16/16 kV or 25/25 kV

Applications and Benefits

– They connect two circuits magnetically but not physically
(mechanically). Avoiding metallic conductive paths between
the circuits they avoid electric disturbances between the two
circuits
– They isolate the AC rail networks from the DC leakage
currents caused by the DC rails that are in close proximity of
AC rails
– They are highly needed to protect networks in densely
populated areas with presence of both AC (rail) and DC
(metro) power systems

Track feeding Railway Transformers
Mobile Transformers and Substations for Railway

Product Range
– Power typically up to 63 MVA
– Voltage up to 220 kV

Applications and Benefits

– Used as spare “Plug and Play” transformer or substation
solution to quickly energize power lines
– Pre-engineered packages vs highly-flexible and customized
solutions: ABB offers both transformer solutions
– Fully assembled with or without HV and MV switchgears on
train carriage or trailer, and tested before delivery
– Designed for fast delivery and quick commissioning
– Ready for service: Plug & Play concept
– Optimum dimensions and weights: highest power output
per volume and weight
