Lab Report

General Chemistry
Submission on Canvas ONLY
1

• The lab report should be submitted on canvas in the “Practical Laboratory Report ‘’
section under assignments.
• The deadline is on the 12th of April , Sunday at 11:59pm
• It is advised to submit the report 2 hours before the deadline incase of an electricity
shutdown or loss of internet connection
Checking for plagiarism and similarity
2

• The formative assignment submission is opened to check for plagiarism and similarity
percentage.
• You can submit your report in the “Formative Assignment” section as many times as
you want.
• Submitting your report in the “Formative Assignment” section is a step that should be
done before the actual submission in the “Practical Laboratory Report ‘’ section.

Lab Report Points
1. Title:

❑ Measuring the concentration of sodium hydroxide by

titration.

2. Introduction:
A brief explanation of why the experiment is being carried out.

❑ Experiment is conducted to find the unknown concentration

of NaOH using titration a type of volumetric analysis

❑ The experiment will allow us to find the volume of HCL

required for calculations

❑ To explain which neutralization reaction is taking place

Lab Report Points
3. Hypothesis:

The idea which is being tested by the experiment

❑ To test the one to one ratio theory between NaOH and HCl and its
validity

❑ To explain that the endpoint will prove the molar ratio

❑ To write down the balanced chemical equation

4. Aim of the Experiment:

The reason why the experiment is being carried out and what the
ultimate objective of the experiment is.
❑ To state the objective of the experiment is to find the concentration
of NaOH after finding the volume needed for HCL in the
experiment.
Lab Report Points
5. Background:
An account of the theoretical and practical principles and ideas behind
the experiment.
❑ To talk about the two main components (NaOH and HCl) their properties, the bonding of each component, there pH,
where we can find them, their uses, and how they interact together

❑ Titration definition

❑ Titration two types and which type they will be conducting

❑ Explain how acid base titration could be used on any other acid and base with the understanding of molar ratio

❑ List real life examples of where titration could be used

❑ That titration is a type of volumetric analysis and quantitative method

❑ To explain what a quantitative analysis is

❑ To talk about titration and the purpose behind it (mentioning volumetric analysis)

❑ Explain what an indicator is and its importance

❑ Mention the time of indicator used and why we used that indicator (explaining how it changes colour in acidic medium
and basic medium)

❑ What other indicators could have been used and why (example phenolphthalein)

❑ Explain that the experiment is to be repeated three times for accuracy and precision

❑ To explain the concept of accuracy and precision

❑ Aim of the washing procedure

Lab Report Points
6. List of Apparatus and materials:
❑ 250ml Conical flask

❑ 250ml Beaker

❑ NaOH solution

❑ 10ml Pipette

❑ Methyl orange indicator

❑ HCl solution

❑ Measuring cylinder

❑ Filter funnel

❑ 50ml Burette

❑ Burette stand

❑ White marble tile

Lab Report
7. Safety/Hazard information and controls:

❑ Wearing gloves, googles, and lab coat

❑ Explaining what the consequences might be when not handling the chemicals properly

❑ To mention asking the instructors when not knowing something

❑ In case of breakage what should the correct procedure be

8. Diagrams :

❑ Picture of the titration instruments aligned in their place (cited)

❑ Draw a setup of the titration using a ruler (don’t forget to label)

9. Method:

An account, in the past tense, of how the experiment was carried out and any
modifications you had to make to your technique.

❑ List the procedure using past tense

❑ To also include all the washing procedure and rinsing the apparatus with the solution
used
Lab Report Points
10. Results and Discussion

Readings, measurements, etc. clearly presented in tabular form if possible

❑ Qualitative Results -> color changes that were seen

❑ Quantitative Results
1. Mention all three titres and how to obtain them using final titre minus the initial
titre

2. Averaging the titres for the sake of accuracy

3. Mention the C1V1= C2V2 equation

4. Obtaining the number of moles of HCL
5. Conducting the molar ratio to get the moles of NaOH

6. Obtaining the concentration of NaOH

7. Making sure all units are correct

8. Making sure all equations and calculations are present step wise

❑ Discussing the results whether they are close to the right answer or not and if not,
what may have been some sources of error

❑ Explaining that the theory tested was true and proven

Lab Report Points
11. Conclusion:
A discussion of your results, the inferences which can be drawn from them and
whether it supports your hypothesis.
This may then also lead on to a further theoretical explanation of your
conclusions.

❑ To summarize the purpose of the experiment and

its objective (mentioning that titration was used to
find the concentration of NaOH against HCL)

❑ Explain how the theory of 1:1 ratio was proved

when reaching the endpoint

❑ State the concentration that was found and a brief

discussion about it
