Evidence: Forum “Football vs the others”

Colombia has always been an outstanding country when it comes to sports.

Names such as Martin Emilio “Cochise” Rodriguez, Antonio Cervantes “kid
Pambelé” and more recently, Mariana Pajón and Nairo Quintana, are points of
reference when talking about cycling, boxing and BMX.

But, although we have excellent athletes in all these sports, football is by far the
most popular and most supported sport in our country. A great part of the
budget that is designated to sports goes just to football. Most of the sporting
events broadcasted on national television are related to football. This can be
seen as unfair with other sports where athletes have to make a bigger effort to
receive support and attention from the government.

Answer the following questions in your participation in the forum:

 What sport do you follow in Colombia and why? (If you don’t follow
sports here, or at all, explain why not.)

 I dare to say that I love football because it makes me feel happy and
although I love football, I rarely paly it. I think that in everything there are always
two sides to the coin, heads or tails, I mean that while players are playing, fans
are watching. So, for that reason when my team plays in Bogotá, I wear my team
jersy and I accompany them from the tribune.

 What do you think about the popularity of football and the fact that it
receives more attention from the government than other sports? Is it
fair?

 I consider It’s not fair, for as long as I can remember, Football has all the
attention from the government than others sports, not at all but the
majority. I think it is because there are more population interested in
football, it gets more attention from the government. You know, wherever
you go, you come across a soccer field and if the majority of the population
likes football, the government will take advantage of the situation to
manipulate the people.
 What can we do in order to help athletes in other disciplines to have
better conditions and support?

 Unless the population changes their preferences in sport, I think it is a

complex dilemma to solve, but I think is a good idea to do awareness
campaigns and acceptance of new sports because this would attract the
attention of new investors and even the government.

 How can we motivate national channels to broadcast a wider type of

sport programs and not just football?

 Only if we attract the attention of new sponsors, other sports will have more
relevance in the media and more people would choose to prefer or practice
a new sport. After that happens, it will be possible to attract the attention of
the government, which would improve the conditions of these sport.
