CHAPTER 1

THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND

Introduction

To meet people’s unceasing demand in our modern time is the ultimate goal of our team.

Change is inevitable. Satisfaction is one of the answers to this boundless insistence of human

being. Those are the reason why we, as electrical engineering students, innovated a project and

titled it “power generation utilizing h-darrieus wind turbine and solar power for automated lamp

post with rainwater harvesting in Sitio Balagbag, Brgy San Isidro Rodriguez, Rizal ”.

Nowadays, everything can be useful. Every single thing can be converted or transformed

into something new, something useful. This is the reason why we innovate our project to

appreciate simple effort to satisfy the consumer.

This simple project is intended to allow anybody to correlate or interact with a power-

producing equipment. It ultimately allows us to see how simple things can be useful to be

another source of energy. It can likewise be an immediate source of energy in case power runs

out in your place. At the end of the proposed project, we do hope to give humanity a chance to

have an explicit opportunity to generate power and to understand how simple utilities can help us

make a difference so that we can give importance and value to it.

Expecting other people to make a change individually will not be very simple. Steps

should be completed first in order to see the desired outcome eventually. However, a global

effort is extremely needed to create an effort to make a difference. Fortunately, this

recommended venture is trying to accelerate this way of thinking. As a way of that thinking, we

made ourselves aware of this procedure recently. So, we hope that with this project, we will be

able to attract more people to take simple measures in helping establish a healthier living

environment. We will take this dedication for sustainable energy with our basic knowledge in the

field of electrical engineering to constitute an efficient and working instrument that can be

essentially used for the approaching time.

1.1 Background of the Study

Wind energy and solar energy is the source of renewable energy. It does not contaminate,

it is inexhaustible and reduces the use of fossil fuels, which are the origin of greenhouse gasses

that cause global warming. In addition, wind energy is a “native” energy, because it is available

practically everywhere on our planet. Solar energy works by capturing the sun's energy and

turning it into electricity for your home or business, which contributes to reducing energy

imports and to creating wealth and local employment.

For these reasons, producing electricity through wind and solar energy its efficient

use contributes to sustainable development.

Wind and solar energy does not emit toxic substances or contaminants into the air or

water, which can be very damaging to the environment and to human beings. Toxic substances

can acidify land and water ecosystems, and corrode buildings. Air contaminants can trigger heart

disease, cancer and respiratory diseases like asthma.

Wind and solar energy does not generate waste or contaminate water an extremely important

factor given the scarcity of water. Unlike fossil fuels and nuclear power plants, wind and solar

energy has one of the lowest water-consumption footprints, which makes it a key for conserving

hydrological resources.

1.2Statement of the Problem

The researcher have observed that outpost in Mt Balagbag in Rodriguez Rizal has no any

lamp post for lighten their outpost because of the low or no budget of the barangay of San

Isidro. As an engineering student we must do something to have street lights and also to put

power in street lights and in addition in this project due to lack of water facility in the outpost we

proposed to harvest water in rain or mist and filter to be drink.

1.3Significance of the Study

1.3.1 Academic Significance

The result of this study will contribute greatly to the School of Colegio De San Gabriel

Arcangel considering that wind energy power AC loads place an important role in reducing of

energy consumption cost in the school of Colegio De San Gabriel Arcangel.

1.3.2 Community Significance

The result of this study will contribute greatly more on the residential area that wind and

solar energy plays an important role in producing lights for outpost in that area. In addition,

creating a nature-inspired wind and solar power will help residential area in our community or

our country to reduce consumption in their homes in the near future to look forward what we can

do our community.

1.3.3 Environmental Significance

This study is emphasize the use of Renewable Source of Energy (Wind and Solar energy

in this case) and this newly founded source of energy can be found in the nature making it

environmentally friendly. Wind is a renewable energy source. Overall, using wind to produce

energy has fewer effects on the environment than many other energy sources. Wind turbines do

not release emissions that can pollute the air or water (with rare exceptions), and they do not

require water for cooling. Wind turbines and solar power may also reduce the amount of

electricity generation to fossil fuels, which results in lower total air pollution and carbon dioxide

emissions.
