FIRST SESSIONAL- SCHEME OF VALUATION

1. The latent heat of evaporation at the critical point is

None of the above. (01Mark)

2. The function of baffle plates used in Babcock and Wilcox boiler is to-
To allow maximum exposure of water to the hot flue gas. (01Mark)

3. Belt drive is a :

Friction drive (Non-Positive) (01Mark)

4. A stepped cone pulley is used for

Changing the speed of the driven shaft (01Mark)

5. In a reaction turbine

Steam pressure decreases in both moving and fixed blades. (01Mark)

6. Determine the mass of the dry saturated steam that can be raised from water at 30º C by
supplying 26354.4 kJ of heat at pressure of 0.9MPa. (03)

From Steam tables properties of steam at 0.9MPa or 9 bar.

Tsat = 175.4°C, hf = 742.6 kJ/kg, hfg = 2029.5 kJ/kg & hg = 2772.1 kJ/kg
(0½ Mark)

Initial Enthalpy at 30°C

= m. Cp. ΔT
= 1 x 4.187 x 30
= 125.61 kJ/kg. (01 Mark)

Enthalpy required to produce 1 kg of dry saturated steam:

= 2772.1 – 125.6
= 2646.5kJ/ kg (0½Mark)

Mass of dry steam produced= 26354.4

2646.5
= 9.96kg (01 Mark)

7. With a neat sketch explain the propelling force in a impulse turbine? (02)

 The propelling force in a impulse turbine is the high velocity jet of steam, coming out of
the nozzle which is made to impinge on the blades of the turbine
 The jet of steam gliding over the blade gets deflected in the circumferential direction
causing the particles of steam to undergo a change in the direction of motion which gives
rise to a change of momentum and therefore a force, which will be centrifugal in nature.
 The particles of steam exert centrifugal pressures all along their path on the curved
surface of the blade, the resultant of all these centrifugal forces causes it to move.
 When number of such blades are fitted on the circumference of the rotor they will be
moved by the action of the steam jet in succession which in turn sets the rotor of the
turbine in continuous rotation.

8. Give any four classifications of the boilers (02)

i) According to the axis of the shell: Horizontal boiler, Vertical boiler & Inclined boiler

ii) According to the application: Stationary boiler & Mobile boiler

2
iii) According to the location of the furnace: Internally fired boiler & Externally fired boiler

iv) According to the type of fuel used: Solid fueled boiler, Liquid fueled boiler & Gaseous fueled boiler.

v) According to the method of circulation of water: Natural circulation boiler & Forced circulation
boiler.
vi) According to the flow of water and flue gases: Fire tube boilers & Water tube boilers

(Any four points 0 ½X 4 = 02 Marks)

9. Two shafts 2 meter apart carrying pulleys of 80 cm and 20 cm diameter connected by a crossed
belt system. Determine the length of the belt required and also calculate speed of the driven shaft if
the bigger pulley on the driving shaft rotates at 500 rpm and the slip is 2%. (03)

N2 / N1 = (d1/d2) (100-S )/100; N2 = 500* 80/20 * (100-2)/100 = 1960rpm …….1.5 mark

L= π (80/2+20/2) + (80/2 +20/2)2/200+2*200 = 569.5 cms ……… 1.5 Mark
