combustion chamber which can be idealised as a flat plate measuring 120cm*80cm. The flow is
parallel to the 120cm side and transition Reynolds number is equal to 5*105
4. A room is heated by initiating fire at the fireplace. The exfiltration of the room air through a 05 04
chimney is reduced by the use of a glass-door fire screen of height 0.8m and width of 1.1m. If the
ambient air temperature is 250C and the surface temperature attained by the glass is 1750C.
Calculate the free convection heat transfer rate from the fire place to the room. Use the following

5. A stroke motor cycle petrol engine cylinder consists of 15fins. If the outside and inside diameters 05 04
of each fin are 200mm and 100mm respectively, the average fin surface temperature is 4750C and
atmospheric air temperature is 250C, calculate the heat transfer rate from the fins for the following:
(i) When the motor cycle is stationary (ii) when the motor cycle is running at a speed of
60km/h.(Take L=0.9D) (ii) The fin may be idealised as single horizontal flat plate of the same
area(Take L=A/P).
6. Water is heated while flowing through a 1.5cm*3.5cm rectangular cross-section tube at a 05 04

velocity of 1.2m/s. The entering temperature of the water is 40 C and the tube wall is
maintained at 850C. Determine the length of the tube required to raise the temperature of
550C are ρ= 985.5kg/m3, Cp=4.18 KJ/Kg-C υ= 0.517*10-6m2/s, K=0.654W/m-C, Pr=3.26,
Use Dittus- Boelter equation with water is heated.
7. A metal clad heating element of 10mm diameter and emissivity 0.92 is submerged in a 05 03
water bath horizontally. The surface temperature is 2600C under steady state boiling
conditions, estimate the power dissipation per unit length for the heater. Assume that
water is exposed to atmospheric pressure and is at uniform temperature.

Properties of water and vapour are: ρl= 958.4kg/m3, hfg=2257 kJ/kg, are ρv= 4.807kg/m3,

8. Derive the expression for Nusselt’s theory of laminar condensation over a flat plate with 05 02
necessary assumptions.
9. A condenser is to be designed to condense 1800kg/hr of dry and saturated steam at a 05 03
pressure of 10kpa. A square array of 400 tubes, each of 8mm outer dia is used. The tube
walls are maintained at 240C by a coolant following through the tubes. Calculate the heat
transfer coefficient and length of each tube assuming single pass.
Properties: Tsat= 45.80C ρv= 0.0676kg/m3, hfg=2393 kJ/kg ρl= 993.95kg/m3,

10. In a counter-flow double pipe heat exchanger, water is heated from at 250C to 650C by an 05 04
oil with a specific heat of 1.45 KJ/Kg0C and mass flow rate of 0.9 kg/s. The oil is cooled
from 2300C to 1600C if the overall heat transfer co-efficient is 420 w/m2 0C. Calculate:
(i)The rate of heat transfer (ii) Mass flow rate of water
(iii) The surface area of heat exchanger
11. A heat exchanger is to be designed to condense an organic vapour at a rate of 500kg/min 05 04
which is available at its saturation temperature 355K. Cooling water at 286K is available
at a flow rate of 60kg/s. The overall HTC is 475 w/m2 0C. Latent heat of condensation of
organic vapour is 600 kJ/kg. Calculate (i) The number of tubes required, if 25mm outer
diameter, 2mm thick and 4.87m long tubes are available (ii) The number of tube passes,
if the cooling water velocity (tube side) should not exceed 2m/s
12. What is effectiveness? Derive the expression for effectiveness of parallel flow heat 05 02
