1. Define curriculum in 5 ways. Use your own words.

a. Curriculum typically refers to knowledge and skills students are expected to learn.
b. Curriculum is the guidelines by which different content matters are taught and
assessed.
c. Curriculum is a content learning that needs to be achieve.
d. Curriculum is a set of course where abilities or specializations are develop.
e. a sequence of mental, physical, emotional experiences.

2. What are the different curriculum conceptions? How do these concepts help you
understand better the importance of a curriculum in schools?

Curriculum conceptions are:


a. Curriculum as fact
b. Curriculum as a practice
c. Curriculum as a means to attain self-actualization
d. Curriculum as a cognitive process
e. Curriculum focused on technology
f. Curriculum as having social relevance
These concepts greatly assisted us to become an effective and efficient educator.

3. What are the different levels in curriculum? Explain each level.

Societal level of curriculum – this curriculum is developed by professional experts such


as curriculum and subject specialist and also other groups like the stakeholders,
administrators, politicians, etc.

Institutional level of curriculum – refers to educational setting, teaching practices and


guides and other content-learning matters.

Instructional level of curriculum – this field focuses on “HOW” students learn and the
best way to educate. It includes the learning strategies of teachers and materials used.

Experiential level of curriculum – knowledge and skills outside the traditional classroom
experienced applied.
4. Differentiate the 3 major types of curriculum. Why is it important to understand these 3
types of curriculum?

Subject-Centered
- is a rigid type of teaching where a student receives a lecture from teachers or textbooks
over a specific period of time regardless of student’s abilities or interests.

Experience/Learner- Centered
- refers to the unique ideas, interests and experiences of students which turn out to be the
basis of this curriculum.

Society/Culture- Based
- learners of this curriculum are into social relations. It involves the study of life, beliefs,
practices, norms and others.

It is important to understand these 3 types of curriculum for us to know WHAT and


HOW learnings to convey.

5. Identify the different designs and patterns in each major type of curriculum and give a
brief description of each.

Activity Based – is a learning by doing process. It encourages students to actively


participate in their own learning experiences through practical activities such as problem-
solving and independent investigation.

Child-centered – focusing on the interests and needs of the child rather than in the
educational process.

Social process and different functions – individuals and groups interact and establish
social relationships. Closely linked to the culture and society.

Process-Oriented – enables people to work towards their goal in a way that the procedure
of attaining a specific objective nurtured
6. Make a reflection on the importance of understanding curriculum concepts, levels and
types.

As a second courser, I really had a hard time understanding and internalizing all of these
teaching concepts especially for just a short time. It challenged me to study more and do
research. I will share my little knowledge on what I understand about the curriculum
concepts, levels and types. Curriculum is a set of courses that comprise a given area or
specialty of study. Thus, it should be well-planned, organized and studied by the
professional specialist. There are many things that need to be considered. First, the
lecturers should know the different behavior of the students and different
methods/approaches in teaching. Second, the environment should be like a home where
students are comfortable on what they do. Third, the school should have an information
kiosk or libraries so that students can spend their free time productively. That would be
my reflection to this topic.
