Researcher from Department of Industrial Automation, Universiti Kuala Lumpur Malaysia looks
forward on the importance of energy harvesting from the environment and from the human
daily activities. They created an experimentation on energy harvesting using piezoelectric
transducer for common workout such as jogging, walking, lunges, squatting, and sit-up. The
data were captured using a data logger, Omron zr-rx25 and the experiment was done indoor
and on a flat surface. In the study, it includes that how much the piezoelectric does to the
human body and they conclude that the higher speed will produce more voltage compare to
the slow speed exercise and the height and weight of the students does not much influence on
the total of energy harvested. For the improvement, the voltage produced can be used to
charge a battery cell for energy purpose.

The study from Quantum school of Technology proposed a new concept of energy harvesting
through smart gym. They used piezoelectric crystals to generate electric output from the
surrounding vibrations. When a piezoelectric crystal is subjected to vibration, it can generate a
very small voltage, or commonly known as piezoelectricity. The study discussed numerous
methods to convert a traditional gym into smart gym by the use of piezoelectric material. This
piezoelectric material can convert vibration from footstep into electrical energy and in order to
achieve that conversion, the piezo materials are placed under flooring of tile made up of rubber
so when the movement is felt by the material they can generate the electricity. The concept of
the study has a great scope since the various method they discussed for generating electricity is
eco-friendly and no cause of pollution, they can encourage other countries where youths are
becoming more fitness conscious.

In a research conducted by Qifeng, Cui., et.al., they built a complete electro-solid-fluid

simulation model for the valve-less micro-pump elements excited by a piezoelectric actuator for
medical application. By increasing the excitation voltage at same excitation frequency, the
maximum pump flow and maximum pressure will increase. Among the three commonly used
piezoelectric materials in the study, the PZT-5A actuator generates the largest pump flow. This
Valve less micro-pump has many advantages compared to other reciprocating pumps and it is
possible that the optimal design of the valve less micro pump is achieved at the early stage of
its design.

In medical application, piezo are used for ultrasound scanners. It works when the ultrasound
scanner sends out a pulse through a transducer at a typically frequency of 3 to 5 MHz for usual
system. The transducer is placed on the abdomen of the pregnant woman and the pulse of the
ultrasound send to the tissue into the wombs. This reflective sound is captured by the
individual piezo elements then analyzed and results are displayed in the screen. By the use of
beamforming techniques, (beamforming is a technique focuses in a wireless signal towards a
specific receiving device) it is easy to determine where the reflected sounds come from.
