Behavioural research has found that educational performance is highly correlated with
substance abuse (e.g., Bukstein, Cornelius, Trunzo, Kelly, & Wood, 2015; Hawkins, Catalano, &
Miller, 2010). Economic studies that look at the link between alcohol use and educational
outcomes have customarily focused on measures of educational attainment such as graduation
(from high school or college), college matriculation, and years of school completed (e.g., Bray,
Zarkin, Ringwalt, & Qi, 2010; Chatterji, 2006; Cook & Moore, 2013; Dee & Evans 2013; Koch &
Ribar, 2011; Mullahy & Sindelar, 2014; Renna, 2008; Yamada et al., 2006). Consistent with the
behavioural research, early economic studies found that drinking reduced educational
attainment. Cook and Moore (1993) and Yamada et al. (1996) found that heavy or frequent
drinking in high school adversely affects high school and college completion. Nevertheless, the
validity and reliability of the instruments in these studies are open to debate (Chatterji,
2006; Dee & Evans, 2013; French & Popovici, 2009).

Circulatory system: The heart and lungs can be very affected by alcohol consumption, including
binge drinking and heavy drinking. Consuming too much alcohol can cause high blood pressure,
irregular heartbeat, trouble pumping blood through the body, blood clots, stroke,
cardiomyopathy (sagging heart muscle), heart attack, other heart disease, and breathing
difficulty. Malnutrition from alcohol consumption can also lead to anemia.

The committee reviewed the literature on the potential adverse effects of marijuana use among
adults including effects on cognitive functioning, memory, and mental health issues such as
anxiety, depression, and psychosis. We found substantial evidence for associations between
marijuana use and memory impairments lasting at least seven days after last use, as well as the
potential for acutepsychotic symptoms immediately after use. We found moderate evidence that
adults who use marijuana regularly are more likely than non-users to have symptoms or
diagnosis of depression.

The present findings highlight the extensive use of cigarettes, alcohol, and marijuana among
Mississippi public high school students. Because poor academic achievers are more prevalent
among students who participate in these substance‐use behaviors, multifaceted approaches
that encourage high levels of academic performance, while dissuading student involvement in
risky/problem behaviors, may both improve low levels of academic achievement and reduce
behaviors that contribute to poor health in adulthood.

- It affects the performance of a student to his\her academic projects or activities.

Some studies suggest that individuals with attentional and emotional problems continue to
smoke at high rates and are less successful with smoking cessation. With the majority of
smokers beginning to smoke by age 18, adolescents with attentional and emotional
dysfunctions also have a higher risk for smoking compared to those without such problems.
Smoking behavior may reflect adolescents' use of nicotine for self-medicating purposes: to
reduce symptoms associated with attention-deficit/ hyperactivity disorder, and to regulate
emotions among those who struggle with depression or anxiety.

- this Substances can affect the emotion of a person.
