Introduction:
An Egogram is simply defined as: 'a bar graph showing the relationship
of the parts of the personality to each other and the amount of
psychological energy emanating outward. This is an essential tool for
understanding the energy of a person emancipating outwards. There
are five key ego states, namely Adult, Nurturing Parent, Critical
Parent, Free Child and Adapted Child. The relationship and balance of
these ego states help us understand the key essence of a person’s
personality.

My Personal Egogram is given below:

Here I have rated my ego states out of 10.

Critical Parent (CP):

Critical parent state explains behavior that is controlling, patronizing
and often very critical. People who have this state in their personality
in higher volumes tend to be more critical of others, often putting them
down and telling them what to do. Thus it can be said that people with
this trait display more authoritarian behavior. The authoritarian nature
is also exhibited in manner of speech and condescension. In
conclusion, this state represents the stricter, discipline oriented side
of parenting. I generally do not display qualities associated with this
trait, which is why I have rated it at only 3 out of 10.

Nurturing Parent (NP):

I have given 7 out of 10 weightage to Nurturing Parent state. People
with higher Nurturing Parent State exhibit nurturing, caring
tendencies. They tend to show nicer, open behavior towards people.
This open and nurturing behavior is also exhibited in their speech and
body language. According to the views of my peers I tend to exhibit
qualities associated with these ego state quite often, attributing to the
relatively high rating.

Adult:
Starting off with the most prevalent of the ego states, I have rated my
adult ego state at 5 out of 10. Adult ego state represents behaviour
responding to here and now, marked by logic and rationality. This is
also attributed to our computer like objective problemsolving ability as
well as ability to provide non judgemental feedback. People with
higher adult ego state generally look at the outside world from an
objective point of view, looking at issues rationally and arrive to non
judgemental conclusions. Based on experiences from my personal life
as well as external feedback, I believe I exhibit these qualities but I
am not sure that how much I have obtained these qualities, So I have
rated myself as medium.

Adapted Child (AC):

The adapted child ego state represents tendency to either conform to
rules and expectations or to rebel against them. In contrast to free
child, adapted child state represents the existence of external
expectations and acting according to them. People can either rebel
against the rules and regulations, expectations and protest
accordingly through different kinds of behavior. They can also choose
to accept the expectations and try to fulfill them without protesting. I
believe that there are times I do act within inhibitions and confines of
expectations. That’s why I have rated my adapted child ego state at 3
out of 10.

Free Child (FC):

The free child state represents the qualities of a person like
spontaneity, creativity etc. A person with high energy in this state is
generally someone who acts freely without inhibitions. They express
their joy, bewilderment, sorrow and pain freely without qualms.
Another important trait is that they aren’t constrained within the
expectations set by others and act independently. The general
behavior tends to be more candid and freespirited . I mostly tend to
act free from other’s expectations and show emotions without
inhibitions. I also tend to be spontaneous most of the time. Which is
why I have rated my free child state at 7 out of 10.
