Questions 26 to 31 are based on the following passage.
1 Joanne Rowling was born on 31st July 1965 at Yate General Hospital
near Bristol and grew up in Gloucestershire, England and in Chepstow,
Gwent, in south-east Wales. Her father, Peter, was an aircraft engineer at the
Rolls Royce factory in Bristol and her mother, Anne, was a science technician
in the Chemistry department at Wyedean Comprehensive. 5

2 At the age of 25, she lost her mother in the year 1991. The death of her
mother shattered her completely. After the death of her mother, she moved
to Portugal for a change and taught English as a foreign language.

3 In 1992, she married a Portugal TV Journalist Jorge Arantes. She became

pregnant and gave birth to a daughter, Jessica. However, her marriage did 10
not last long. After thirteen months, she divorced him and moved to
Edinburgh, with her daughter. At this point, she had written the first three
chapters of “Harry Potter.”

4 By the end of 1993, the situations became worse. She was a single parent
of a newborn baby, living in a cramped apartment. She was penniless and 15
she had no permanent work. She went through depression and had a hard
time. However, she did not give up on her dreams.

5 For the sake of survival, she rented an apartment and was forced to live
on state benefits. With that money, she looked after the needs of her
daughter. She was ashamed, distressful and had no idea where her life was 20
going. These tough situations did not break her. She spent most of her time
writing at a local cafe.

6 After sheer patience and hard work of five years, she completed her first
book and that was the first edition of Harry Potter. It was 1995, and the
struggle of getting it published began. She had to rewrite the first chapter of 25
her book fifteen times.

7 Getting it published was never an easy journey. She received replies from
the publishers as, “It is too difficult for children”, “It is too long”, “Children would
not be interested in it”. Her manuscript was rejected by the top twelve
publishing companies. She was disappointed and had no idea what to do. 30

8 Finally, whilst training as a teacher, the publishing house in London,

Bloomsbury, gave her the green light. She added “K” to her pen name and
sold the rights of Harry Potter to Bloomsbury for four thousand pounds and
never looked back.

9 Her book hit the shelves and faced instant hit. Harry Potter won the British 35
Book Award for Children’s Book of The Year and later translated into other
languages. Harry Porter started spreading round the globe and soon she
received thousands of letters from fans.

10 By the time the whole world fell in love with Harry Potter, her third and
fourth edition had broken all the records. Her series of seven books have 40
since been sold more than 450 million copies which transformed her life
completely.

11 The success of her books led Harry Potter to the screen. Warner Bros.
purchased the film rights to the first two novels for $1.5 million. For over 13
years, Warner Bros. produced all the seven series of Harry Potter and made 45
it one of the most successful film franchises in screen history.

12 In 2011, Forbes estimated her total worth was about $1 billion. However,
she lost her billionaire status after giving away much of her earnings to charity
but remains one of the wealthiest people in the world.

Question 26 to 31 are based on the following passage.

1 That morning on December 10, 2010, Roma Taljera arrived at the call centre bright and early.
She had been working there for two years and loved her job, connecting with customers and
making new friends. After work that Friday, she headed home alone after her shift, looking
forwards to having supper with her parents and brother, and a long phone chat with her fiancé
Vijay. 5

2 Managing to squeeze herself into a ladies’ compartment on the Mumbai suburban electric train,
she tried to settle into a corner near the door. Jammed between other women, she was trying to
find some space to stand safely on when she suddenly got pushed, lost her foothold and was
thrown out of the coach.

3 Baleshwar Mishra has a very different story. The lanky youngster, an unemployed high school 10
dropout, has recently come to Mumbai to look for a job. His job hunt had proved fruitless and he
was running out of options. He had spent his day with a friend, watched a movie and boarded the
train. Standing near the door of his train speeding in the opposite direction, he could not
believe what he had just seen - a young woman in black salwar kameez lying next to the tracks.

“There’s a girl by the tracks!’ people cried out. Impulsively, Baleshwar grabbed the train’s red 15
4 emergency chain and pulled it down frantically. The train screeched, slowing down. “Let’s go
and help her!” he shouted to the other passengers. But nobody volunteered, afraid of getting
involved, of being inconvenienced perhaps. His heart hammering in his chest, Baleshwar jumped
off the still-moving train. As he landed on the ground, a burst of pain shot up his ankle. But there
was no real damage. He got up and started to sprint back between the tracks as his train picked 20
up the speed again and disappeared. “I hope I am not too late,” he thought, gasping for breath.
After running for several times, he found her sprawled by the side of the tracks. “Sister, are you
alright?’ But there was no response and no help in sight.

Baleshwar could see blood flowing out of the gash behind the young woman’s head. Saying a
5 silent prayer, he lifted Roma gingerly and made his way away across the track, searching for a 25
way out. He crossed through some shrubbery and followed the direction of the sounds until he
found the road. “My sister is injured,” he implored motorists who drove by. “Please help me take
her to the hospital.” But no one stopped.

Just when he was beginning to lose hope, a tempi-truck pulled over and its middle -aged driver
6 steeped out. “Help me,” Baleshwar pleaded and the man helped him lay Roma down in the back 30
of his truck. Ten minutes later, they arrived at a small hospital. But as the facility lacked personnel
and equipment, the on-duty physician was not able to do more than give basic first aid. He advised
that she be moved to a bigger hospital nearby. Baleshwar and the driver had no choice but to
move her back into the truck. When the vehicle moved, Roma stirred and opened her eyes. Before
she blacked out again, Baleshwar managed to her name and her brother Dinesh’s mobile phone 35
number. he used the driver’s phone to call Dinesh

Dinesh rushed to the hospital and arrived at Divine Hospital minutes later. Dr Agarwal, the
7 medical director there, admitted her immediately to the intensive care unit. He asked Baleshwar
to hang around until Roma’s family arrived. They noticed then the driver, having done all he
could, had left quietly, “Oh, I couldn’t thank him!” Baleshwar thought. 40

Roma was still unconscious. But her X-rays showed that although the injuries looked severe, all
8 she needed were deep wound sutures. There would be no lasting damage, but Dr Agarwal
believed she could have bled to death had nobody helped her. When Roma finally opened her
eyes that night, her brother and fiancé were by her side. She could barely speak; she just nodded
and fell asleep again. 45
When Baleshwar came to meet her the next morning, Roma was still partly sedated. Her fiancé,
9 Vijay, struggled to find the words. “Thank you,” he finally said to a smiling Baleshwar. Roma
was amazed to learn of the manner in which she had been rescued. “I think it’s astonishing that a
stranger would jump off a train and risk his life for me. I can never repay Baleshwar.

“I am new to Mumbai, but I notice that people here are afraid,” Baleshwar, who is still looking 50
for a job, say. “They fear getting trapped in the courts or with the police.” So why did he do it?
10 “She needed help,” he simply says. “That day, it was Roma. Tomorrow, it could be you or me
by the tracks, bleeding and alone.”

Questions 26 – 31 are based on the following passage.

1 I got my first laptop when I was just sixteen. It was an Apple Macbook Pro-
A svelte, ultra-slim, stylish laptop, with the latest features like a fast processor and
graphics technology. My parents thought a laptop was a useful learning tool with
great educational possibilities. Moreover, they believed that it would provide me
with a solid foundation that I will need in an increasingly digital world. Needless 5
to say, I was extremely excited. In fact, I loved my laptop. It was love at first sight.
With an Internet connection, I could do anything I wanted. I could go
2 anywhere I wanted and talk to anyone I chose just with a click of the mouse. At the
time. I thought that owning a laptop was the best thing that had happened to me.
Little did I realise that it would eventually turn out to be an overbearing, time- 10
consuming monster.
I spent hours watching plethora of YouTube videos and playing my
3 favourite online games, such as Mario Bros. and World of Warcraft. Besides
gaming, I started filling my free time with other Internet activities: social
networking, instant messaging and downloading movies and TV series. Soon, I 15
began to feel more at home with my online friends than my real friends. I was
spending hours sitting in front of the bright screen.
As time passed, I could not stop the compulsive need to surf the Internet. It
4 interfered with my schoolwork and seriously impacted on my social and personal
life. Moreover, I sacrificed hours of sleep simply to spend time online. Getting up 20
in the morning was a daily struggle.
Initially, my parents were not worried. They thought that my addiction was
5 a fad that would soon correct itself. However, when my grades in school started
deteriorating, on top of drastic changes in my behaviour, they were more
concerned. It drove them to despair. They started voicing their disapproval and 25
tried to limit the time I spent online. I knew what I was getting into but I could do
nothing to control my addiction. The moment I was alone, I could not resist the
insatiable urge to peek at my email, browse through my blog feeds or check out
videos on YouTube. Yes, I had become an Internet addict!
One night, I heard Papa and Mama blaming each other for my condition. I 30
6 could hear Mama’s stifled sobs and sense Papa’s growing frustration. The incident
tugged at my heartstrings. I knew they were devastated. I felt guilty. How utterly
selfish I had been! My mind whirled as I finally realised that my addiction had
negatively impacted my life. It had caused me to withdraw from social activities
that I used to enjoy. It had also caused my relationship with my parents to become 35
strained. That night, I decided that I had to conquer my addiction. I resolved to
make my parents happy. I wanted them to be proud of me again.
With the help from my parents, I agreed to limit my Internet usage to an hour
every day. I kept an alarm and set the time. Once the alarm went off, the Internet
7 was off-limits. The first few days were extremely tough. I was on the verge of 40
giving up many times, I persevered. As time passed, it got easier.
At the same time, I made an attempt to hang out with my friends and even
played football again. To Mama’s surprise, I helped her with the household chores
8 like washing and cooking. Every time I felt the urge to sit in front of the computer,
I went for a long walk or watched a movie instead. Eventually, after three months, 45
I was finally able to kick the habit.
The Internet is really a fun place. You will never get tired of it as it never
runs out of things for you to do. It is easy to slip into an Internet coma but it is
9 another thing to rid yourself of it. Nevertheless, one can avoid getting addicted by
being disciplined and finding other interests to keep the mind occupied. 50

Questions 26 – 31 are based on the following passage.

1 Can a pair of scissors become a tool for empowerment? Can a haircut change the lives of the
underprivileged? Daniel believes so. Daniel and his team give free haircuts to the homeless. Above
the snipping of scissors and the dull buzz of a clipper, the banter and laughter between Daniel and
his customers for the day fill the air. As their hair falls, their smiles brighten. It’s these connections
with the homeless that are at the heart of Daniel’s social initiatives. 5

2 “A pair of scissors is just a tool. What matters is the conversation within the haircut. You have no
idea what that person has gone through, and a haircut is the first step to open up the door to that
relationship.” Coming from a family of artists, it is easy to see why Daniel gravitated towards a
creative career. But to his surprise, his ultimate success was what made him feel restless and empty
inside. He was looking for something more and he would find it with those who had less. 10

3 Daniel’s search for a meaningful use of his skills led him out on the streets of Kuala Lumpur where
he gave free haircuts to the homeless. He knocked on the doors of orphanages and old aged homes
offering his services. Through this simple act of offering a haircut to uplift others, he was able to
find his purpose again. “It’s just amazing when we really put aside money, and you just focus on
the people, something magical just happens during the conversation and that’s what makes me 15
excited about it.”

4 Daniel realised that his skills could also be used to empower youth from underprivileged
communities and began to offering training. He has worked with ex-convicts and ex-addicts, but it
is training of the youth from the Orang Asli community that is closest to his heart.

5 Daniel regularly travels to the village to give free haircuts to the community, and to train some of 20
the youths. When he arrives at the village, he is greeted with warmth, and is soon chatting and
laughing as he and his students cut and colour hair.

6 The village head, Tok Batin, says that jungle work is hard and doesn’t provide a stable income, so
Daniel’s work in the village brings benefits to the community. “I feel happy the youth here have
been studying under Daniel because now they know how to cut hair. With their earnings, they will 25
put the money in the bank to save, and then they will financially support their parents,” he says.

7 The indigenous peoples of Peninsular Malaysia are collectively known as Orang Asli. The 18 Orang
Asli subgroups within the Negrito (Semang), Senoi and Aborigen-Malay groups represent around
210,000 people or 0.7% of the population of Peninsular Malaysia. For thousands of years,
they lived off the jungle. But in modern times, development, logging and palm oil plantations have 30
taken over their lands, and a lack of education and opportunities has made it hard for them to
integrate. Poverty levels in this community remain high, according to a 2015 United Nations report.

8 At the end of the day as Daniel shares a cold drink with his team, there is a look of contentment on
his face. “I’m very excited every time I go to their village, it’s a learning process for me about the 35
whole culture, about the people, about the environment,” he says. “This is where I want to really
journey with them, empower them, and see what I can do with a pair of scissors, to transform their
lives.

Questions 26 to 31 are based on the following passage.

1 It was his first day working at Walmart and Cameron Aulner had a few butterflies
in his stomach. An hour into the shift, he had already made a couple of sales. Out of the
blue, a man started shouting, “Stop that man”, from another part of the store. Aulner who
had lost the use of his legs eight years earlier in a fall from a roof, backed up his wheelchair
to avoid trouble. “There must be a shoplifter,” he thought. “None of my business.” 5
However, the voice grew louder and then the man said something about a little girl.

Chris Belvin was shopping with his two young sons. He had thought of taking a
2 pass on Walmart that morning as he had woken up with a flu and was moving slowly.
However, it was his younger son Keegan’s eighth birthday and they usually went to the
store, before heading home for cake. Now with his wife, Cindy, trawling the grocery aisles, 10
he took Keegan and Adam, ten, to check out the toys.

A former security guard, Belvin immediately noticed the scruffy man in a tan
3 baseball hat walking quickly down the aisles. The man did not look like he was
shopping. Then, Belvin heard the cry of a little girl, “Somebody help me!”

In the LEGO aisle, a ten-year-old girl had been pushing her two-year-old brother 15
4 in a cart. Now Belvin overheard her frantically telling someone that a man had just grabbed
her backside. “Was he wearing a black shirt and a tan baseball hat?” Belvin asked her.
When she said yes, he took off to find him.

Heading towards the front of the store, he spotted the man about 30 metres ahead
5 walking rapidly towards the door. As Belvin closed in on him, the man started running.
Belvin yelled, “Stop him! That man had just molested a little girl.” Then he saw Cameron 20
Aulner leave his station and wheeled quickly towards the checkout aisles. “I thought, What
is this man going to do?”

As Belvin describes the situation, “Cameron wheeled himself in front of the

6 assailant at the perfect time. The suspect crashed into him, and Cameron fell out of his
chair.” Belvin and two other men ran over to them, while Aulner struggled to hang on to 25
the suspect, whom he had dragged to the floor as he went down. “I think he was really
surprised that a man in a wheelchair just tackled him,” says Aulner. While one of the
other men helped Aulner back into his chair, Belvin jerked the suspect to his feet. The
30
man tried to pull away, but by the time the store’s security guard appeared a few minutes
later, the suspect had given up.

7 “It is not in every call you respond to that the suspect is already subdued,” says
James Bolger, the police officer on the scene. As he led the assailant, Kevin Salyers away,
a group of customers let loose a string of harsh words. Belvin meanwhile, rounded up his 35
sons and returned to the little girl, who later told the police that Salyers had passed her
twice and then squeezed her backside as she tried to press against a shelf of toys.

8 The girls’ parents, who had been shopping elsewhere in the store, rushed to their
daughter’s side and thanked Belvin and Aulner. So did other shoppers. Aulner said he acted
on instinct and credits his only season of high school football for his winning tackle. “You 40
do not disrespect a woman, whether she is two or 100,” he says, adding “I
do not think of myself as a hero. I just did what is right.”
