Chapter Two: Manila – Its Origin and History

Lesson Three: Colonial Period

By the beginning of the 19th century, all Spain’s colonies became chaotic due to corrupt
administration, opening opportunities for educated Filipino patriots to revolt against their
colonizer.
In the final years of Spanish rule, the country’s present national hero emerged,
challenging colonial rule with his political writings. José Rizal (José Protacio Rizal Mercado y
Alonso Realonda) was an educated Filipino who was put on trial and executed on December 30,
1896 for his part in the revolutionary movement, the “Katipunan”, at Bagong Bayan which is
presently called Luneta Park. Today his name is found throughout the city and country,
including a park and museum within the city's historical core of Intramuros.

My assigned topic is about how chaotic the Spain’s colonies was during the beginning of
19th century. Because the administration of Spaniards was corrupt. Then Dr. Jose Rizal became a
hero by fighting the Spaniards through his written works, exposing the Spaniards corrupt
administration and inhuman ruling our country. Rizal was educated enough to fight for
revolutionary group of Filipinos called “Katipunan” aiming for their freedom. That leads Rizal to
be executed on December 30, 1896 at Bagong Bayan and now called as Luneta park. Rizal is
really brave that’s why up until now his braveness is not being forgotten.
