How to Use and Care for a Chemex Coffeemaker

The Chemex coffeemaker is a simple and effective way to make good, clean tasting coffee. With its hourglass form and wood and
leather collar, it is a gorgeous addition to any kitchen’s countertop.

What you’ll need:

(1) Chemex 6-cup Coffeemaker
(1) Chemex trifold filter
(1) 6 Tablespoons coffee, coarse grind
(1) 2 1/2 cups of boiling water (200 degrees Fahrenheit)
Step 1: Prepare the filter
1.1 Unfold the Chemex filter so the three-layer side covers the
spout.
1.2 Pour just enough hot water over the filter to form a seal between
the paper and glass.
1.3 Hold one side of the filter in place and pour out the water on the
opposite side of the Chemex.

Use caution when pouring, the water will be hot.

Step 2: Add the coffee

2.1 Add the 6 Tbsp of coarse ground coffee into the filter.
2.2 Shake the Chemex gently to settle the coffee grounds.
Step 3: Wet the grounds
3.1 Pour just enough boiling water to saturate the grounds.
3.2 Stir the grounds gently to ensure there are no clumps.
3.3 Let the coffee grounds bloom for 30 seconds.

Step 4: First pour

4.1 Pour the water in a slow, circular movement making sure to
keep the level below Chemex’s top rim.
4.2 Allow the water to drain into the bottom section.
Step 5: Continue to pour
5.1 Add the remaining water in a circular movement making sure
the grounds are soaked evenly and the water does not go over
the top rim.
5.2 Let the coffee drain completely.

Step 6: Toss the filter

Remove the filter and grounds and discard.

Use caution when removing, the filter and grounds will be hot.
Step 7: Enjoy
Hold the coffeemaker by the wooden neck and pour the freshly
brewed coffee into a coffee mug.

Step 8: Stay warm

Keep the coffee warm by placing the Chemex directly on either a
gas flame or glass stovetop at low heat. If you have an electric coil
stove, you must use the Chemex stainless steel wire grid between
the Chemex and the coils or breakage can occur.

Be sure that there is a small amount of liquid in the Chemex

while the carafe is on the stove or breakage can occur.
Step 9: Clean
Clean with warm soap and water once the Chemex is cooled.
