Your home in the sun
Being a very young person, you may still have no idea about your future home: where it is going to
be, and what it is going to look like. We would like you to start thinking about it right now. What’s
more, we’ve got ideas for something that may turn out to be your second home: a holiday home, a
place to relax and have fun in. Think the South of Europe. Think Cyprus or Italy, for instance. Here
are some tips to get you started.

4.1.
Your future work life will surely be hectic and very demanding. You will probably have very little
time to go through holiday brochures and plan your time-off schedule. And yet, going on holiday
and relaxing is absolutely crucial for people as busy as you’re going to be. With your own home in
the sun, things will always be simple and easy: you’ll know it’s there, waiting for you any time.

4.2.
Many people choose their dream holiday destination, pay loads of money to get there, and then get
terribly disappointed as they find out it is not what they really wanted. With your very own home in
the sun, you will have all your needs and dreams answered any time you get there. Depending on
what you choose, your favourite way of spending free time in perfect weather is always guaranteed.

Have you ever been chased by your neighbours for your partying lifestyle? Or perhaps told off by

Shoe obsession
What the Cinderella myth teaches us all (and especially little girls) is that shoes can magically
transform our lives. Shoes are a force for change, a means of breaking with the past and moving into
the future. For long periods in history women’s shoes were kept in the dark under a long dress or
crinoline. But although they were so well hidden, they were and still are very informative. Eyes may
be the windows to the soul, but shoes are the gateway to the self.
Psychologists have explored the hidden meaning of shoes. Some say that the woman who collects
shoes is a frustrated traveller; others suggest she is symbolically searching for enlightenment. A pair
of new shoes might not cure a broken heart or soothe a headache, but it will relieve the symptoms
and chase away the blues. Even the least fashion-conscious people have been known to blow an
entire month’s salary on a new pair.
In fact, the average American woman owns at least 30 pairs of shoes; the passionate collector has
hundreds of them. A person buying each new type of her favourite shoe style follows the well-
known principle: when you find a shoe you love, buy it in every colour. Foe shoes will never let you
down: feet don’t gain or lose weight, and whereas we might not be able to wear our favourite
trousers if we gain a few kilograms, we can always wear our favourite shoes.
Shoes have always reflected the wearer’s status and economic position. Aristocratic women of
the early 19th century wore paper-thin slippers made of brocade while their maids walked about in
heavy black leather boots. The gold sandals worn by Roman empresses just like the contemporary
Gucci loafer have functioned to demonstrate class and money.
Shoes not only reflect social history; they are a personal record of our lives. They are like
touchstones that make us remember a time, a place, an emotion. Shoes preserve the past because
they are mementoes of occasions on which they were worn. A child’s tiny first shoe as well as
wedding slippers, often carefully kept in their original boxes, bring back memories as vivid as those
in a photo album.
When it comes to shoes, practicality and comfort are not important. The impulse to buy a new
pair has nothing to do with need – it is the thrill of slipping into a new shoe and changing into a new
person that pushes us to buy. An old shoe may be reassuring, but it is never exciting. New shoes
have a talismanic quality, and that probably explains why 88 per cent of all women buy shoes that
are one size too small for them. Because, well, does it really matter? Sensible shoes demand respect,
but high heels promise the magic of adventure.

About penguins
A new penguin chick born to the parents of a stolen baby penguin will play an important role in the
conversation scheme. When it reaches an appropriate age, it will be sent to South Africa and
released into the wild.
The chick was hatched two weeks ago, on 14 February, to penguins named Kyala and Oscar. Their
first offspring, Toga, was just three months old when it was stolen from Amazon World Zoo on the
Isle of Wight. Thieves broke in and stole the infant penguin overnight on 17 December last year.
Some people claimed they had seen it, and in fact a reward of £25,000 has been offered, but Toga
has not yet been found.
Kyala and Oscar spent weeks looking for their lost offspring but finally, on 19 January, they laid
two eggs. One of them has proved to be infertile, and the other one hatched to produce the chick
which still remains unnamed.
Derek Carson, the owner of Amazon World, said that the chick was only the second penguin which
was born at the zoo, while Toga was the first. He added that Toga was destined to go to live in
South Africa as part of a conservation programme but as he has gone, the new chick will now take
his place.
Although it is possible to come close to the penguin family now, the sex of the animal is not known.
It will be possible to determine it, and so to give the chick a proper name, when it grows feathers,
which will happen in about eight weeks’ time.
