4.1. ____________
The USA has always called itself a country of immigrants. Even today, the USA accepts more immigrants than the
rest of the world. That is why it is a country where many different cultures, religions and traditions meet and blend.
4.2. ____________
People immigrated and still immigrate to America in search of a fresh start, to escape poverty or to find lost hope.
In the past, they immigrated in large numbers because they wanted to avoid hunger in Europe, as it was in the
case of Irish immigrants, or to escape religious aggression in their countries, for example in Britain and Holland.
4.3. ____________
Until the end of the 19th century, migration to the United States was mostly from Ireland, Britain, France, Canada
and Germany. But at the beginning of the 20th century, there was a massive wave of immigration from other parts
of Europe. In 1919 and 1920, over two million Italians and one and a half million Swiss and Norwegians migrated to
America. In addition, over two million Central and Eastern Europeans immigrated between 1880 and 1924. People
of Polish origin are the largest Central and Eastern European group in the United States.
4.4. ____________
Over twelve million immigrants passed through a single point – Ellis Island, a small island in New York Harbour –
between 1982 and 1954. This island was the gateway to a new life for huge numbers of people. Those that passed
the checking procedure on the day of arrival on the island were allowed to enter the American mainland. Those
who didn’t had to get back on the ship for a journey back to the country they had come from.

Help out at the Kind Kennel Shelter

The Kind Kennel Shelter is the biggest animal rescue center in the city. We are extremely busy and we are always
looking for people to help out. No two days are the same. One day, a customer may leave a two-metre snake with
us. Another day someone may find a pet that had gone missing months ago. However, some chores need doing
year round. Someone needs to walk the dogs and clean the animals’ cages. New arrivals must have their fur
washed and be given essential medicine. It is also necessary to meet and greet the public and take them to see the
pets. A big part of your job will be encouraging people to choose the less popular animals. The beautiful ones
never stay long, but the other ones need homes too.

Tekst C

Dear Mr Lato,
thank you for visiting the Kind Kennel Shelter yesterday. We’re very pleased that you are interested in adopting
Smokey. He is a lovely cat and I am sure he will be very happy with you. Before Smokey can join you, we will
arrange a home visit to see that it is right for you and Smokey. It’s standard procedure. Sometimes people return
animals to the shelter after adoption. It’s irresponsible and unacceptable. People should make sure they
understand the reality of owning a pet before they decide to adpot one. However, to prevent this we will make sure
that your home is suitable for Smokey, for example by checking that there are not too many pets already living
there. We also request a small fee to cover the costs of looking after Smokey while he has been at the shelter.
Thank you for your help,
Harry Walker

Tekst D

Nora How was the animal shelter today, Harry?

Harry Difficult. We had four new rabbits today and we have to think of names for them.
Nora So that’s difficult? Choosing names for rabbits?
Harry Well, we have hundreds of animals and they all have different names. It’s a difficult decision because if
you choose the wrong name, like for example ‘Chaos’ for a dog, nobody will take your pet home!
Nora I like the name Bun Bun. How about that?
Harry That’s the most common name for a rabbit in the country! We need original names.
Nora So what have you chosen?
Harry We haven’t thought of any yet, so they just have numbers for now, not names!

Bronze gets stolen?

A huge, modernist sculpture has disappeared from a university campus in west London, heightening fears that
monumental bronzes are becoming popular with thieves as they can be melted down for pure metal.
One of The Three Watchers, a set of figures created by Lynn Chadwick in 1960 and worth around £300,000, was
stolen from the grounds of Roehampton University after being cut off at the feet. The theft happened less than a
month after Henry Moore’s three-million-pound gigantic Reclining Figure was driven away from a sculpture park in
Hertfordshire. Both statues were taken at night by thieves probably using a lorry with special lifting equipment. The
Metropolitan Police said yesterday that as many as twenty similar thefts of bronze artworks had been reported in
and around the capital within the past year.
The price for pure metal has risen sharply and this has opened up an opportunity for gangs to make a quick profit.
The Henry Moore sculpture, taken in mid-December, is believed to be worth around £5,000 if melted down; the
Chadwick may bring as little as £1,000. Reduced to pure metal, the figures are worth only a fraction of their art
market value but neither police nor art dealers believe such large objects would be stolen for a private collector. In
many cases, the sculptures have been severely damaged.
Detective Sergeant Vernon Rapley, the head of the Metropolitan Police’s arts and antiques unit, refused to identify
any of the artworks apart from the Henry Moore. ‘They were all large bronzes,’ he said. ‘Not in any one particular
style. They included human figures, abstracts and even a seven-foot cockroach. In one case, the thieves stole part
of a sculpture. We don’t know whether this is one gang or a number of operations imitating each other. The only
thing the sculptures had in common was the material: bronze.’

Laughter Can Be the Best Medicine

Can humour really help those who are ill? Experts seem to think so, and there is plenty of evidence that they are
right about this. 7.1. ____________ Moreover, it can greatly improve the immune system. Some experts even
say that laughter can help patients to live longer, although that particular idea hasn’t been clearly proven.

In a recently published study, researchers at the University of Maryland revealed that laughing helps to protect the
heart. Around 95% of volunteers experienced better blood circulation when they watched comedy films.
7.2. ____________ According to Dr Michael Miller, the cardiologist who headed the Maryland study, the benefits
of laughter lasted for 12 to 14 hours.

Presenting his findings at the American College of Cardiology conference, Miller encouraged experts to consider
laughter therapy as a weapon in the fight against heart disease. ‘Regular, cheerful laughter should be added to
exercise and a low-fat diet as a means of lowering the risk of heart disease,’ he said. 7.3. ____________ The
Theodora Children’s Charity trains entertainers to become ‘clown doctors’ in hospitals around Britain. Joanie
Speers, a spokeswoman for the charity, says that the clowns help to bring the sense of normality back into the
patients’ lives, which they tend to lose when they are in hospital. ‘Children in hospital are not only upset and
homesick, they are also often very bored,’ Speers says. 7.4. ____________ Laughter produces endorphins which
make them feel better. In this way, it helps to make the traditional medical treatment more effective.

A. It appears that regular visits from clown doctors have made a big difference to their recovery.
B. While humour generally brings benefits to patients, they are less likely to laugh when they are in hospital.
C. In contrast, almost two thirds of them had a drop in blood flow when asked to view more serious ones.
D. Hospital staff in Britain are already trying to combine conventional medical treatments with an injection of
humour.
E. Studies have suggested that humour can help patients with allergies and increase pain tolerance.
