LIFE IN A VIKING VILLAGE

4.1.

The Vikings lived in houses called “longhouses”, some of which could even be
over 70 metres long. The whole family, including all generations, lived together
under one roof. The fireplace was usually located in the middle of the house.
This is where food was prepared and meals were eaten. Instead of a chimney,
there was a hole in the roof through which the smoke could escape. There were
no windows, so it was dark and smoky inside.

4.2.

The Viking diet was based on meat, which both rich and poor Vikings ate every day. Since they could hunt
well, their diet included not only goat, pork, chicken and lamb, but also rabbit and deer. There is evidence
that Vikings liked to boil their meat with vegetables rather than fry or roast it. The ones living on the coast
ate all kinds of fish. The Vikings also ate vegetables, milk products and some fruit, especially wild apples and
berries.

4.3.

The children of the Vikings did not go to school. Instead, they learned practical skills at home from their
parents by observation and imitation, and later from other people in their village. Boys were taught how to
farm, build boats, make weapons, sail, and fight. Girls, on the other hand, learned how to take care of the
animals and run homes when the men were away. Some children also learned to read and write using
runes, which were a kind of alphabet.

4.4.

The Vikings worked hard, but they also had time for sports and games. Among their favourites were
running, swimming, wrestling and … board games, as they were perfect for practising their strategy skills.
Children played with wooden toys their parents made for them or played ball on ice or in the fields.
In winter, the Vikings used skis and ice skates, both for fun and as a means of transport. Music and dance
were also important to them.

dream: a series of thoughts, pictures or feelings that happen in your mind while sleeping, especially during REM
sleep

REM (Rapid Eye Movement) sleep: a part of the sleep period in which your dreams are the most intense. During
this time, your brain activity increases and your eyes keep moving behind your eyelids. Also, your heart rate and
breathing are quick and irregular. About 25% of a night’s sleep is usually spent in REM sleep, and when people
wake up during REM sleep, they often remember their dreams. REM sleep is important for your health because it
helps to deal with feelings and emotions, to remember things, and think of new ideas.

Yesterday, I saw Christopher Nolan’s film Inception. People say great things about it, but, to be honest,
for me it was extremely boring. The only positive thing was Leonardo DiCaprio, who plays the
5.4. , Dom Cobb, who is a skilled thief.
Although I didn’t like the movie itself, it got me thinking. As you may remember from my last entries, I keep
dreaming about this strange old house, and I would love to know if that means anything. I’ve done some
reading and found out that we dream mainly in a kind of sleep that is called REM sleep. During this period
our eyes move (even though they are closed!), our heart beats 5.5.
and we breathe in an irregular way.
Some people believe that what we eat in the evening can change our dreams. One study found that eating
milk products or 5.6. food before bed can influence what you dream
about the most. But science hasn’t confirmed that yet.
Finally, I read an ad for a yoga centre. It says people can learn how to change their dreams while they

Zadanie 6. (0–5)

ARE YOU A CRIMINAL?

“Of course not!” That is certainly the answer most of you would give. But are you sure that you have NEVER
broken the law? Have you never crossed the street in the wrong place? Have you never charged your phone at
work or school without paying for the electricity? Have you never done something wrong because you thought
it was harmless or not that important? If you have, you could be guilty of a “micro-crime”.
A micro-crime is a small act of harm that breaks some rules. It usually seems to have little effect on society and
usually doesn’t lead to legal punishments. But how big is the problem? One of the leading market research
companies published the results of an interesting study. It shows that more than 74% of the people who took
part in the survey are “micro-criminals”, which means they have committed at least one “micro” crime. One of the
experts who worked on the study said, “It’s shocking to think that three out of four people you meet every day
might have a criminal past.”
According to the study, the most common micro-crime is to pay cash to someone who does not want to pay taxes.
Over 43% of those asked said they had done this at least once. Second on the list of the most common micro-
crimes is downloading or streaming TV shows, films or music illegally. It is not surprising that some people find it
hard to say no to free entertainment, especially if they are younger. In fact, almost 60% of 18- to 24-year-olds
admitted to illegal streaming, and almost 50% said they had downloaded something illegally. Most surprising is the
number of people stealing plastic bags from shops. According to the report, 17% of people take plastic bags
without paying for them. If each bag costs only 5 pence, the total loss from stolen plastic bags is around £4.2
million every year. This is an incredible amount which has a big effect on how much money shops make.
The study also looked at which groups of people were most likely to commit micro-crimes. It found that micro-
crimes are most common among the middle class. The percentage of middle-class people who admitted to
committing such crimes was over 80%, compared to 70% for the working class. Surprisingly, age also has
an impact on the number of micro-crimes. Although older people have more opportunities to carry them out,
they are the least likely to admit them. Up to 83% of 18- to 24-year-olds said they had committed at least one
micro-crime.

DO PLANTS MAKE SOUNDS?

Plants can change their colour, smell, and shape. But did you know that they are also
able to react to sounds? For instance, if you play them some calm music, they bend
towards the speakers. That is why some scientists wanted to check if plants can also
make sounds. 7.1. Although these sounds are too high for humans to hear, scientists
can record them with special microphones.
In one particular project, a group of research scientists did an experiment to test the ability
of plants to make sounds. 7.2. There were also some plants they did not even touch.
Then, they put highly sensitive microphones in front of all the plants and started recording.
The result of the experiment was surprising. The plants that the scientists did not touch made less than one
sound per hour. 7.3. They made many sounds every hour.
However, there is no evidence that the plants make these sounds on purpose or that they use them to
communicate. 7.4. For example, the sound a cut plant makes could warn an insect not to lay eggs on it
or feed on it. But this is just a theory. The reason why plants make sounds remains an exciting question that
scientists are still trying to answer.

A. The method they used was very simple – they cut the leaves of some plants or did not water them.
B. Even if the sounds are not intentional, they could still be used by other organisms.
C. There is a possibility that plants can communicate with each other.
D. Surprisingly, they discovered that plants can do that, especially when they are thirsty or injured.
E. But thirsty or injured plants were not so silent and behaved in a completely different way.
