Globalization and Challenges; What are the globalization's contemporary issues?

1. The three (3) things that I significantly learned from the readings are…

i. In the age of globalization, technology has not only played a role in ushering, but also it
has been the main catalyst for its advancement. It serves as that driving forces in which
major breakthroughs in information technology, communication, and transportation have
boomed the global market during the early 21st century. The Internet and information
systems has been considered as the most significant advancement in globalization. Via
the World Wide Web and other search engines, massive amounts of information and data
are available wherein rare questions can be answered. It has been a surge in
telecommunications technology that has facilitated the global exchange of data as though
the Internet has granted people all over the world the ability to share information with
each other. Before advancements like email, cellular technology, instant text messaging,
and broadband communication, businesses were limited to telephone calls and postal
services for their communication needs. The first decades of the 21st century opened the
doors to instant communication to anywhere in the world.

ii. Globalization cannot be considered as a new event; the apprehension regarding

globalization was just happening in the modern era but in fact, Globalization had already
started during the past era. Although no historians could pinpoint when did the
phenomena occur, some of the evidences were, the Silk Road which offered a way to
trade different commodities across Asia, Africa, and Europe. (Benczes, 2014)
Transportation of goods in between civilizations became possible by means of boats, and
galleons. The idea that the world became aware of the economic globalization during the
19th century was known. During only this period of time, monetary values started to
increase due to the industrial revolution along with trains, steamships, and other modes of
transportation made costs of transaction lesser which caused a major development when
it comes to internal and international exchange.

iii. Although globalization was intended for the betterment of the people of a certain country,
a much deeper understanding upon globalization said that this leans more on the
satisfaction of the government leaders and globalists. This can be read on some of the
article mentioned in the paper which states “In fact, globalists often condemn even
moderate democratic control of markets as harmful ‘interference’—a nefarious ‘caging’
of markets, which deprives people of their salutary effects.” Though being open to such
transactions can be beneficial to the country’s economy, not all transactions can be
beneficial to the people; thus, each transaction should be considered wisely. In fact,
globalization can make poor countries poorer.
2. The three (3) things that are still unclear to me are…

i. “Globalization benefits everyone (…in the long run)”. However, the succeeding
statements gave more light to the ruling power that the first world countries will gain
through these country trades, which may not be reasonable to other countries that will
depend on them. A line from the article expresses “The United States will work with
individual nations, entire regions, and the entire global trading community to build a
world that trades in freedom and therefore grows in prosperity.” This also contradicts
with Steger’s third claim, which declares that no one is in-charge of globalization.

ii. Globalization furthers the spread of democracy in the world.” Yet again, some
researchers also provided examples that disapprove this claim. Based on the article, there
was a “limited definition of democracy.” It is for the reason that political and economic
leaders are in charge of what could be taken for and against globalization. Mostly, first
world countries are the supposed “forerunners” while some poorer countries only do what
the higher one’s state them to do.

iii. Globalization can still be dodged as it depends on the country’s will to do so. However,
reading the article/understanding the lesson, more countries, particularly their political
leaders, are deciding to pursue globalization without weighing its advantages and
disadvantages. As said by Former USA President Bill Clinton, Chairman and FedEx
Corporation CEO, and Former Philippines Speaker of the House of Representatives
Manuel Villar who all agreed on the idea that globalization is inevitable and irreversible.
This may be because it is their last resort to their advancement. Would it be unfair for
some third world countries to be someone who don’t have the freedom to choose what
they wanted because for some, they are only pursuing this concept for the idea that it will
help the country progresses

3. I used to think that…

Globalization brings about only positive results, such as advancement and growth, to a
country and its people. However, reading the article/understanding the lesson, I now
think/realize globalization can also be a threat to the stability of a country as it may wage a
disastrous civil war or world war. With a wrong turn of events and decisions, globalization
may cause the fall of a country. This is based on Steger’s sixth claim that is “Globalization
requires a global war on terror.” It is a great disadvantage to a nation.

Also, I used to think that globalization will open more doors to progress, especially to
countries that need them the most. However, reading the article/understanding the lesson, I
now think/realize that globalization may also open doors to colonization since first world
countries dominate the inferior ones. There will be a greater gap between the wealthy and
less fortunate countries.

4. The three (3) questions that I want to ask about the readings are…

i. Do political affairs have nothing to do with economic globalization?

ii. Why did gold reserves become a basis of monetary value in the past century?
iii. What possible repercussions could happen if there would be a mismanagement when it
comes to these international organizations
iv. Is it possible for nobody to be the dominant leader of globalization?
v. How can people embrace the idea of globalization if it is handled by an authoritative
government rather than a democratic one?
vi. Do drastic measures have to be taken for globalization?
vii. Is globalization the primary solution to poverty and underemployment?

Integration Processes in the Global Economy: Current State and Prospects. The Cases of
The European Union, ASEAN Economic Community, and NAFTA by Janina Witkowska

1. The three (3) things that I significantly learned from the readings are…

i. In the systematic analysis of interaction between international institutions, a complex and

systematic analysis of interaction may actually exert casual influence on each other’s
development and effectiveness. In the article, four general causal mechanisms were
presented. These can elucidate the distinct routes through which influence may travel
from one institution to another. Also, institutional interaction can thus rely on transfer of
knowledge, commitments established under an institution, behavioral effects of an
institution, and functional linkage of the ultimate governance which targets the
institutions involved.

ii. There are various types of economic integration processes that should be introduced and
should be considered. These economic integration processes include Free Trade Areas
(FTAs), Customs Union (CU), Common Market (Internal Market), Economic/Monetary
Union, etc. Thus, integrating countries who were practicing these types of discipline
should fulfill some economic and political conditions before entering into any stage of
integration. Yet, countries should also be aware that despite all of the advantages offered
by the economic integration processes, there are also problems that are connected to these
main integration factors, effects and limit.

iii. A hierarchy of integration groupings exists. For instance, as stated on the article, “Free
trade areas constitute the base of the pyramid, and an economic/monetary union is the
peak.” Wherein it thoroughly explained in the article how free trade areas are the most
frequent form of integration grouping in the global economy and, more advanced
integration groupings are relatively rare. Countries especially the third world countries
are now opened in a free trade negotiation with other countries especially those who
would help them in times of need. It may be referred to as a “give-and-take” relationship
but that is what globalization does when talking about the relationship of both countries,

2. The three (3) things that are still unclear to me are…

i. “Four freedoms” were stated on the article a lot of times which would bring about both
micro-and macroeconomic effects in the integrating area, yet it was still vague of what is
its significance. It was not thoroughly tackled in the article what are the profits and
unprofitable act of these.
ii. There are many terms, such as two-speed integration process, FDI flows, ASEAN
Investment Area, ASEAN Economic Community, etc which was mentioned in the article
yet like how “four freedoms” was mentioned; these two terms was not fully explained

iii. As mentioned on the article, “Free trade areas constitute the base of the pyramid and an
economic/monetary union is the peak.” However, it was not explained fully why this is
so. Also, there are less supporting details to fully signify the claim.

3. I used to think that…

A complete economic integration can be done easily by a country who wanted to incorporate
these type of discipline upon a certain area. However, reading the article/understanding the
lesson, I now think/realize that there are many proper measures that need to be taken before
implementing economic integration. Thus, a thorough examination about the topic should be
done in order to full examined what would be the advantages and disadvantages will it bring.

Also, I used to think that economic integration might not help the less fortunate countries to
prosper but will give more gain to the first world countries. However, reading the
article/understanding the lesson, I now think/realize that economic integration provides great
opportunity wherein countries can benefit from all of the reserves and resources because it
allows a country’s economy to prosper by trading. Also, it will help the less fortunate countries
to globalize not only within a small and finite area but will also be known globally and infinitely.

4. The three (3) questions that I want to ask about the readings are…

i. Will the advantages of a complete economic integration be able to compensate its

disadvantages?

ii. Is it really possible for a comprehensive economic integration?

iii. In an integrating groups, how are countries chosen and divided?
