Chemistry Objectives for Chapter 1 – Introduction to Chemistry

From this chapter students will understand the following:

1. The definition of chemistry and the significance of chemistry among the

science disciplines,

2. How chemistry plays a role in research as in the example from the textbook
on ozone and chloro-fluorocarbons.

3. The definition of mass, examples of substances that have mass and those
that do not have mass.

4. The distinction between mass and weight.

5. The importance of creating models to explain scientific data.

6. The definition of the scientific method and its importance in conducting

scientific research. The steps of the scientific method and the significance
of each step.

7. The difference between qualitative and quantitative data.

8. The difference between a scientific theory and a law.

9. The distinction between pure research and applied research.

10. Examples of chance discoveries.

11. The basic principles of lab safety
