Q-1: For the electromechanical system shown in Fig.1, if v(t )  Vm sin(2 .50.t ) and winding
resistance is R ohm, find (in terms of parameters shown in the Fig.1, v(t) and R):

1. Expression for field energy.

2. Expression for average force on the plunger.

Q-2: Consider an electromechanical system whose flux-linkage equations given by:

 1 
1  5i1  10 1   cos  r
 1  im 
 1 
2  i2  20 1   cos  r
 1  im 
where, im  i1  2i2

 r is the mechanical rotor position. Derive expressions for the coenergy and torque in terms
of i1, i2, and  r .

Q-3: A 2-pole, 3-phase ac winding is housed in 18 slots, each slot having 12 conductors.
Consider the time instant at which the current in phase a has its maximum value 10.0 A.

(a) Sketch all the 18 slots on a horizontal axis. Mark the direction of currents in the
conductors occupying the slots relevant to phase a. Make a proportional sketch of the MMF
wave of phase a only.

(b) Mark the maximum value of MMF wave on the sketch.

(c) Calculate the peak value of the fundamental of the MMF of phase a.

Q-4: Find the number of turns per phase for a 3-phase, 50 Hz, 10-pole alternator with 120
slots. The winding is to be star-connected to give a line voltage of 11 kV. The flux/pole is
0.30 Wb. All the windings of belonging to a particular phase are connected in series.

Q-5: A 750 kW, 11 kV, 3-phase, star-connected synchronous motor has a synchronous
reactance of 35 W/phase and negligible resistance. Determine the excitation emf (i.e. voltage
induced in stator windings) per phase when the motor is operating on full-load at 0.8 pf
leading. Its efficiency under this condition is 93%. Draw the phasor diagram for full load
condition and 0.8 pf.

Q-6: For a 3-phase, 400V, 50Hz induction machine, the speed from no-load to full load drops
from 1490rom to 1300rpm. Find: (a) Number of poles in the motor? (b) Percentage slip at no-
load and at full-load? (c) What is the frequency of rotor voltages at no-load and at full-load?
(d) What is the speed at both no-load and full-load of: (i) the rotor field with respect to rotor
conductors (ii) the rotor field with respect to the stator and (iii) the rotor field with respect to
the stator field.
