EPM 611: Theories of Electrical Machines

Answer All Questions Time Allowed: 2 Hours

The examination consists of Four questions in Two pages

Question 1: (Marks 25%)

a) Express the rotating air gap MMF for:

i. The 3-phase stator sinusoidally distributed windings with N3φ
number of equivalent turns in each winding. Assume the
windings are excited with ia =√2 I3φ cos ɷt, ib =√2 I3φ cos (ɷt-2π/3),
ic = √2 I3φ cos (ɷt-4π/3).
ii. The 2-phase stator sinusoidally distributed windings with N2φ
number of equivalent turns in each winding. Assume the
windings are excited with ia = √2 I2φ cos ɷt, ib = √2 I2φ sin ɷt .

b) Fig. 1 shows the 2-pole representation of the double-cage induction
machine. The 3-phase stator winding is represented by the coils DS and
QS. Coils DR1 and QR1 represent the top-cage winding. Similarly, coils
DR2 and QR2 represent the bottom-cage winding. Based on your
knowledge of the voltage equation of Kron’s primitive machine, write
down the voltage equation in matrix form of the double-cage induction
machine. Derive an expression for the instantaneous torque of this
machine.

Question 2: (Marks 25%)
a) If [C] is the transformation or connection matrix from old to new set of
variables, then:
i. Derive the condition for the power to be invariant in both the old
and the new set of variables.
ii. Find the new impedance matrix.

b) Fig. 2.a shows 3 coils with no electrical interconnection. The operational
equations of the system are stated by the matrix equation: ,

Question 4: (Marks 25%)
a) Draw the power flow diagram in a 3-phase induction machine. Derive the
steady-state electromagnetic torque of the induction machine.

b) A 50 hp, 60 Hz, 3-phase, Y-connected induction motor operates at full
load at a speed of 1764 rpm. The rotational losses of the motor are 950
W, the stator copper losses are 1.6 kW, and the iron losses are 1.2 kW.
