COMMUNICATION

Jodi Bahrijczuk
Intro to Educational
Technology: Fall 18’
Student Activity: Communication Social Story

Background information to my activity:

My students are non-verbal and have the communication skills of a two year old. In our
Life Skills class, we are working on communicating wants and needs. My students use the
statement, “I want (insert item) please.” at this present time to ask for things they may
need. We are transferring this statement to be more middle-school age appropriate.

Instead, we are asking them to state a question instead of the command. They will read a
social story that will prompt them through the buttons they can hit on their Voice
Output Device (VOD) to receive the item they want.

They have to ask for the item they want now!

When I finish my work, I can take a break.
I have to say this to get my break.

Can I have ___ please?

*The blank space is used for the student to insert
their choice of a reward. The student I am
working with is putting the word “IPod” in order to
listen to his music during his break time.*
