Multimedia: Audio or Video Lesson Idea

Lesson Idea Name: Molly Carter

Grade Level/Content Area: 1st Grade

Content Standard Addressed: SS1H1 Read about and describe the life of historical figures in Ameri-
can history. a. Identify the contributions made by these figures: Benjamin Franklin (inventor/author/
statesman), Thomas Jefferson (Declaration of Independence)

ISTE Technology Standard Addressed:  What would you like students to know and be
1.6 Creative Communicator a. Students choose the able to do by the end of this lesson: Students by
appropriate platforms and tools for meeting the the end of the lesson should be able to tell about
desired objectives of their creation or communica- Benjamin Franklin or Thomas Jefferson in their
tion. own words, and by video. They will be able to
make a video on Adobe Express about the person
they chose.

What is the student learning goal for this lesson idea? I can read and describe the life of a historical
figure in American history by identifying either Benjamin Franklin or Thomas Jefferson by their contri-
butions. I can make a video presentation about the person I have chosen.

Selected Instructional Software Tool: Adobe Express

Description of Software: Adobe express is a tool you can use to make video stories and graphics. This
is a great tool for students to make their own presentations with audio to talk about someone or
something. One of its excellent features is having access to the tool on any device. It is also free with
thousands of templates, Adobe Stock photos, Adobe Fonts, design assets, and quick actions.

How do you plan to implement this lesson and integrate the technology? Check all that apply:
☐ Teacher-led: There is no student voice and choice in the activities. Students are guided by the
teacher's direction and expectations. Learning activities are assigned to the student and mostly
practice based.

X Student-Led: Students are given voice and choice in the activities. They may select the topic of
learning and/or determine the tool they will use to meet the learning goal. The teacher facilitates
the learning as the students direct their own learning processes.

☐ Problem-based and/or Publishable: Students are solving problems and completing projects to

demonstrate their learning. Additionally, the projects can be shared outside of the classroom.
(Note: This objective could be reached by displaying the project on the school’s morning newscast,
posting the project to the classroom blog, presenting it to another class, or publishing it via an
outside source.)
Lesson idea implementation:
I will introduce the lesson by going over what they will be doing, along with what I expect from them.
I will then go into showing them the Adobe Express video I made that will show them what their
video and information will look like. I will let them know they will be finding out information based
on the person they have chosen, and will make a video of the information they have found. This
video is going to be minimalistic because they are in 1st grade, but what I am looking for in this activ-
ity is the information they find about their chosen person, how/if they put together slides, and audio
over the information they find. If this is too difficult for some children, they can use just the audio to
talk about the information they have gathered or use a video to video themselves explaining their
details. Students will utilize technology by using Adobe Express to make a simple presentation/video
of the chosen person. I will be having them do this during class, that way I am there to help students
make their slides, make sure they are using the recording tool, and staying on task. If this task was
too difficult I could bring them to the carpet as a whole group and we make a presentation as a class
over one of the people listed. Feedback provided to students would be asking how they felt about
this activity. Was it too hard? Too easy? I will conclude the lesson by showing those presentations to
the students parents so they are able to have their presentation and their student can look back
whenever they want.
Managing student learning:
I don’t think the tools will cause a shift in behavior of students, I think they may be excited to use
new tools, but will to be corporative in order to use those tools. If not we may have to step back and
maybe do these as a whole group or small group if independently became too difficult. I would set
time limits in the sense that one day during literature time we would look up different information as
a class and they gather what information they want to use onto paper or onto a story board, then the
next day would be when we would do the technological side of the activity. Doing this all in one day I
think would be too overstimulating. Making sure they are asking their neighbor what they are doing,
helping them when they need it, etc.
Universal Design for Learning (UDL) Reflection: Be sure to mention one specific UDL principle you
are focused on in this lesson – Multiple Means of Engagement, Multiple Means of Representation,
or Multiple Means of Action & Expression.
I think my lesson uses two Universal Design for Learning principles and that is engagement and repre-
sentation, because they are finding information, and representing those details they have found in
different recording tools. This activity and the technology tools I selected support and enhance their
learning experience for everyone within the class because it gives each child voice and choice. They
are able to make their own presentation however they want.
Reflection:
I think this will impact each students learning in the sense that they are aware of another technology
tool they can use in the class and outside the class. I look forward to presenting the lesson, and also
showing them how easy the Adobe Express tool is to use. Showing them this tool can improve their
learning in all grades to come.
