Introduction:
Bus stop is a designated place where the transportation vehicles such as buses, microbus and
tempo stop for passengers to ride or alight from the vehicles. They are usually situated near
highway or the sidewalk next to the streets. In Nepal, most of the bus stop are clearly marked
with bus stop sign while some do not have bus stop sign but are still used as bus stop.
The bus stop are also of different types. Some bus stop which does not have much passengers
consist of only a simple pole and sign. While busy bus stop with a great amount of crowd usually
have shelter and seating for the passengers. The shelters in bus stop may also contains
advertisement of certain companies.
Small bus stop in the sidewalk are for pick up and set down only while larger bus stop such as
Ratnapark, Naya bus park can also be used for parking as well as picking passengers . Bus stop
in Kathmandu are usually ‘Hail and ride stops’ where a vehicle will stop anywhere along the
designated section of road on request.
The bus stop in Kathmandu due to high density of buses and vehicles are usually poorly
managed. Especially in crowded bus stop the buses are usually packed and slow to move until all
the seats are packed hence there is a need for traffic police to manage these buses to prevent
congestion and keep the traffic flow smooth.
In this psychology project we were mainly concerned with the observation of people in Bus stop.
Their behavior in bus stop as well as their reaction to various stimuli in bus park such as increase
crowd, packed buses or empty buses, time of the day etc.
Material:
The material mainly used for this project are
i. Camera for recording
ii. Mobile phone
iii. Paper to take observation and notes

Participants:
The project was done by observing Kathmandu bus stop. So, the participants were regular
Kathmandu citizens waiting for the buses. The participant were usually housewife, office worker
and students. The majority were middle class people without their own transport.

Procedure:
The project main objective was to observe people’s behavior in bus stop. This was done by
following steps:
1. We went to a bus stop in Boudha, Kathmandu
2. We recorded people in the bus stop in their natural environment for around 10 minutes
using camera
3. We observed and noted people’s behavior in bus stop
4. We further analyzed the recorded video to get more data of people’s behavior in bus stop
Observation:
1. People waiting for bus at Bus Stop,
2. People look impatient in waiting for buses.
3. Some people were feeling angry when asked to board jampacked micro/bus.
4. People look frustrated in waiting several minutes.
5. Noise pollution caused stress
6. Some People gossiping with other strangers/people.

Discussion:
The psychology project given in the class was to observe people behavior in bus stop. In
accordance with the project we conducted an observance of people in Boudha, Kathmandu at 4-5
pm which can be considered as peak time due to office worker return. Hence the buses were
more packed than usual.
We observed that people if they were alone they would impatiently wait for the buses with only
some people engaged in gossip or casual conversation with strangers. If people were with their
friends/relatives they would engage in conversation and gossip with each other.
We also found how people react to various stimuli in Bus park. The noise pollution created stress
and frustration. If the buses were late people would be angry. If the buses were packed than
people were reluctant to aboard the buses. If the Bus conductor were rude then the passenger
would show anger toward the conductor. The various responses also varied according to the
passengers.
Conclusion:
In conclusion this project helped show people’s behavior in particular environment . It showed
how people would respond to various stimuli, conditions and other people’s behavior. This
project helped us understand the human psyche and behviour and gave us better understanding of
our class courses.
