news item 11: VOLCANIC ERUPTIONS

There is increased danger of fresh mudflows from Mount Araramo, according to the latest reports from Anturia.
Eruptions reached a height of 2.5 miles yesterday as the volcano entered its eleventh week of violent activity,
despite vulcanologists' predictions that it was subsiding. Mt. Araramo, dormant for three centuries, erupted for
the first time this year on June 9th with the strenght of a 20-megaton hydrogen bomb. That upheaval sent rocks
and plumes of hot ash twelve miles into the air. Large amounts of lava have already been released and molten
rock is continually oozing out of cracks in the ground. Large pieces of floating pumice were found on the surface
of the ocean 150 miles south of Mt. Araramo indicating a simultaneous underwater explosion.

Thousands of trees snapped like twigs seconds after the initial blast. Superheated gases melted ice and snow on
the upper parts of the mountain which resulted in an avalanche of boiling water and mud. Dust reached as far as
4,000 miles, lengthening the glow of sunsets by almost two hours. Massive amounts of CO2 released into the
atmosphere are believed to be adding substantially to the greenhouse effect already threatening our planet.

One hundred people are said to have perished in various volcano related incidents. Some were killed by
poisonous gases, others were buried alive by twelve feet of volcanic ash, or hit by falling rocks. Forty thousand
villagers have already fled the area as heavy rains threaten to send more mud and debris further down the
mountain slopes. Several hundred cattle were killed and 100,000 acres of crops destroyed. The damage is
estimated to be in excess of two hundred million Anturian dollars.

The world experiences an average of thirty major eruptions each year from more than six hundred active
volcanoes. Others, though believed to be extinct because of centuries of dormancy, may be only waiting
thunder back to life.

11. ERUPTII VULCANICE

Există pericol crescut de torente de noroi de pe Muntele Araramo, conform ultimelor rapoarte
din Anturia. Erupțiile au atins ieri o înălțime de 2,5 mile, în timp ce vulcanul a intrat în cea
de-a unsprezecea săptămână de activitate violentă, în pofida predicțiilor vulcanologilor că ar fi
scazut. Mt. Araramo, inactiv timp de trei secole, a izbucnit pentru prima dată în acest an pe 9
iunie cu puterea unei bombe cu hidrogen de 20 de megatone. Acea revoltă a trimis în aer roci
și jeturi de cenușă fierbinte. Cantități mari de lavă au fost deja eliberate și roca topită se
scurge continuu din fisurile din pământ. Bucăți mari de piatra ponce plutitoare au fost găsite
pe suprafața oceanului la 150 de mile sud de Mt. Araramo indicând o explozie subacvatică
simultană.

Mii de copaci s-au rupt ca niște crengi in cateva secunde după explozia inițială. Gazele
supraîncălzite au topit gheață și zăpadă pe părțile superioare ale muntelui, ceea ce a dus la o
avalanșă de apă fierbinte și noroi. Praful a ajuns până la 4.000 de mile, prelungind strălucirea
apusurilor de soare cu aproape două ore. Se crede că cantități masive de CO2 au fost eliberate
în atmosferă crescand substanțial efectul de seră care amenință deja planeta noastră.
Se spune că o sută de persoane au pierit în diferite incidente legate de vulcan. Unii au fost
uciși de gaze otrăvitoare, alții au fost înmormântați de vii sub 12 metri de cenușă vulcanică
sau loviți de roci căzătoare. Patruzeci de mii de săteni au fugit deja din zonă pe masura ce
ploile puternice amenință că vor trimite mai mult noroi și reziduri mai departe de versanții
munților. Câteva sute de vite au fost ucise și 100.000 acri de culturi distruse. Prejudiciul este
estimat a fi mai mare de două sute de milioane de dolari anturieni.

Lumea experimentează o medie treizeci de erupții majore în fiecare an de la mai mult de șase
sute de vulcani activi. Alții, deși se cred că au dispărut din cauza secolelor in care au fost
inactivi, aștepta doar un traznet pentru a se trezi la viață.
