1. Introduction
 It is known that NE should be protected with different links / rout to become minimum
tendency of down time of sites by link problem that avoid single point failure. But in our
region there are NE which is not link protected and due to this sites are down and so
customers are affected, our company loss its image and huge amount revenue.

 Making redundancy is the best solution by creating more than one link with different
route, so that our NE can be protected from any incident occurred from one of the
link ,like fiber cut.

2. General problem
When any incident happens in OF link:

 From Adama to Modjo and Adama to Bishoftu a lot of NE were down

 Sites in Adama town were down.

 Goba rout lots of NE were down.

3. Specific problem
Due to link unprotected, when any incident happened in our OF link, many NE were down
From Adama - Modjo – Bishoftu

 4 SP Sites at Modjo , 1 SSR and 12 SP sites were down at Bishishoftu

 Totally 88 sites affected

 NE which is not link protected and affected due to some incident happen in Adama city.

 From 211083-211020 about 4 sites down.

 From 211043 to 211047 about 5 sites down.

 NE which is affected due to some incident happen from Herero to Dinsho route, more
than 140 sites affected (Goba, Bala Robe, Ginner….).

Ethio Telecom SER Page 2

4. Solution proposed
 Currently Bishoftu SSR 1 and SSR 2 connected from Adama SSR 1 and SSR 2 respectively
through OF which is installed underground and also Modjo as well. To protect those
NE, we proposed to connect Adama SSR 1 to Bishoftu SSR 2 through OPGW. Adama
SSR2 and Bishoftu SSR 1 as well as Adama SSR 1 to Modjo SP ( site ID 211489 ) And also
from Adama SSR 2 to Modjo SP ( site ID 211488 ) continue as per existed underground
OF cable and Bishoftu SSR1 -211488 and bishoftu SSR2 -211489 connected through OF.

 At Adama city

 From MSAG 51 to site 211020 new fibers installed underground so that site 211020
and its down link sites are protected.

 From MSAG 15 to site 211047 new fibers installed underground so that site 211047
and its down link sites are protected.

 Optical fiber re-habitation for SP link from Herero to Dinsho and OPGW backhaul from
Dodolla to Adaba, Since SP link fiber is detolarated and highly loss and Bale Robe route
was working with DWDM link only.

5. Activity done
 From Adama SSR1 to Bishoftu SSR2 a new connection through OPGW is done .The wire
was dropped from EEPCO tower and it was connected again as a new installation that
takes much time and more effort.

5.1 DWDM installation Adama and Bishoftu

At Adama install new OTM- NE Rack and at Bishoftu use the Existing Rack ,Metro 1+13 Rack-
1 ,To Bole Direction) Even though E300 EMS shows newly created direct link connection
from Bishoftu to Adama. For this intended protection, this Bishoftu to Adama fiber link
should be OPGW.

5.1.1 New Rack Install at Adama (OTM site):

 At Adama use the Rack that is going to be relocated from Bishoftu, Which Directs to
Meki Metro connection, the relocating rack is called Metro 1+13 M900 Rack-2,
ID=198.This Rack has no Service & the rack need OTU10GE card, DCM and control
subrack boards

5.1.2 New Rack Install at Bishoftu (OTM site):

 At Bishoftu use the Existing Rack Which Directs to Addis Ababa Bole (For metro
connection), Which is extension rack of Metro 1+13 M900 Rack-1, ID=198 so it has
no OA sub rack. Please relocate OA sub-rack from Meki Metro 1+13 M900 which is
faced to Bishoftu direction. This rack is idle and on power off statues. It needs DCM
& OTU10GE additional Boards.

5.2MODJO-ADAMA 1*GE SERVICE PROTECTION

 To avoid single point of failure (SPF) of current 2*GE IP CSG service from Modjo to
Adama, it is required to protect the service through Modjo-Bishoftu-Adama. The
service will be provided from Modjo-Addis Ababa-Bishoftu-Adama on legacy DWDM
(M900).

 To provide the 1*GE service from Modjo-Adama through Bishoftu-Addis Ababa on

the legacy DWDM, an existing idle GEM8 board at Bishoftu DWDM (NE ID: 157, Slot:
[0-1-3]) will be relocated to Modjo and installed at NE ID: 69, Slot: [0-1-3], then
configured to Addis Ababa direction. At Microwave OMU-ODU patching will be done
and configured to Bishoftu direction. Similarly, at Bishoftu OMU-ODU patching will
be done and configured to Adama direction. At Adama, an existing idle GEM8 board
at Bishoftu DWDM (NE ID: 157, Slot: [0-1-5]) will be relocated to Adama and
installed at NE ID: 67, Slot: [1-2-8] and configured to add/drop the 1*GE service. NB:
both GEM8 boards to be relocated from Bishoftu are to be tuned to channel 5
(192.50THz).

6 Achievement and beneficiary

 The new proposed activity is done and so that the network becomes stable and link
protected.

Ethio Telecom SER Page 11

 Repeatedly down time of sites due to fiber cut is controlled

 Costumers are not losing network and so that we keep our company image and
costumers complain.

 The company not loss revenue generated from those protected sites.

7 Challenges
 The wire was dropped from EEPCO tower Adama to Bishoftu and it was very difficult
to install overhead. This challenge was resisted and the wire was installed overhead
and makes it functional.

 Since the fiber from Herero to Dinsho about 67 km was installed during project and
not fully functional, it was damaged and the performance was degraded, also OPGW
backhaul from Dodolla to Adaba re-habitation of fiber was done day to night to
make it fully functional.
